How to be a responsible Steemian.

This is a guide to help lay some ground rules on what you should and shouldn't do when you join Steemit.

Steemit is a SOCIAL Media platform in every sense of the word, so below are some pointers on how to make friends and possibly even make a bit of money.

Source

1. BE SOCIAL :- As the name suggests, this ecosystem thrives on social interactions. Do not expect people to come and find you, you need to get out there and be seen. This will be achieved by voting, commenting and creating posts. 2 word comments aren't going to cut it though, you need to add value to the original post. Tell them why you agree, or why you liked it. Make the comment personal to THAT post. Experienced users can see straight through a generic comment.

2. CREATE ORIGINAL CONTENT :- Steemit is a platform that provides rewards for content. If you copy and paste an article out of the local newspaper you will not last long on this platform. Of course its fine to paraphrase or even use excepts from an article but ensure that you reference the source. If you're a painter or photographer it may be hard to get too many words, but trust me people really value a bit of background information. Tell the viewer where you took the photo, what equipment you used, any challenges or what you did in post processing. Those additional bits of information add a hell of a lot of value to the platform and will rapidly gain your reputation as a top quality creator.

3. DON'T BEG :- One of the biggest mistakes any new user can make is to beg for votes. Dolphins and whales receive a multitude of memo's on steemit everyday asking them to look at their post. Trust me, they don't care and they aren't going to vote for you. You need to start at the bottom. This system is a popularity contest with new people continually moving through the ranks. As you grow you and your followers will organically move up to being Dolphins and Whales after you've done the hard work. The more value you add to the system, the more you will be noticed and appreciated and rewarded.

4. BE GRACIOUS :- This one can be a bit contentious, but if someone big takes the time to comment or sends you a big vote, then it would be a good idea to send them a quick note either on Discord or via Memo's just to thank them. You may not get a reply, but it shows you appreciate their support.

These are the first 4 tips, and I will return shortly with a follow up on how to really annoy other Steemians.

Remember, the idea is to ADD VALUE and you will be rewarded for the VALUE that you add to the system.

Take care and stay tuned for part 2.

Great post
I have tried to add a bit more info with my photos generally since being on here and still try to do that
But the funny thing is the posts of mine that have done better are those with minimal text

Not sure why that is but I will try to keep adding some thoughts and Info into my posts

And that is exactly why your travel ones generally make it into #traveldigest compared to all the other travel photo posts we sift through each day.

:) thanks for that JUst dconfirms for me to keep adding some thoughts or such to my posts :)

If you're a painter or photographer it may be hard to get too many words, but trust me people really value a bit of background information.

While quite a few of the artists I follow (on other sites as well not just here) will happily ramble on about the piece or just what was going on in life while they were making it, I also know several that want the art to stand on its own without propping it up.

Least the people on here read most of the time, have been on deviantart where people have asked questions in the comments that were in the artist description XD

Still good tips, how many have you got in total? :O or you just gonna keep em coming as you think of them? :D

Mostly as I think of them, but I think the next one is going to be how to piss people off.

Those ones can also be amusing XD

I'm looking forward to the next one! 😉

Thank you for the education. I appreciate you taking the time to help us learn the ropes. These tips are most helpful.
