Mamaka and her mate, Barkisu, were married to the same man, Bakary, as it was their tradition in those days. Almost every man in their time got married to more than one wife. The single reason however, was to ensure that they gave birth to a lot of children that would be used for their farms.
Most men in those days enjoyed farming a lot. There was hardly any of them who did not have expansive lands for farming, especially yam.

There was usually a title given to any man whose ban of yams was large enough to feed the entire community during the yam inspection, which they conducted annually.Bakary was due for such title considering his age, as all his mates had received it long before, but since his ban was yet to be filled, he was afraid that the elders may not confer the title on him.
His first wife, Mamaka, was yet to have any child for him, while Barkisu had seven already. Bakary sometimes, blamed Mamaka for his inability to clinch the title that almost all his friends had received.
Barkisu’s children, four boys and their girls, were very saucy and disrespectiful. They often referred to Mamaka as a maid of the house who only came to serve their father.
