An audit of different steem-strategies': balancing content creation, curation and returns on my investment

View this post on Hive: An audit of different steem-strategies': balancing content creation, curation and returns on my investment

I've moved to Hive, along with most other people, following Justin Sun's takeover of Steem in the Spring of 2020. I believe hive is a lot more decentralised than Steem!

Sort:

Interesting to read this.

So far I have been totally 'old school' - just post and earn, with a bit of curation thrown in.

Until very recently all curation had been manually, but now using auto-voting to manage the projects I have set up.

With over 10KSP I ought to be a bit more professional about it all, but optimisation hasn't been my primary focus of being here.

Just for reference although I don't advertise it as such but delegation to A Dollar A Day does get the delegator on the auto-voter as a token of appreciation.

Your current 100 SP delegation (I don't think it is 200 is it?) earns a daily vote of $0.06 I see at the moment. Is that a good return - I am not sure. But thank you very much for the delegation - much appreciated.

It would be 200, but I couldn't find the 'delegate' button next to my SP yesterday when I tried to delegate another 100, when it reappears I'll get onto it!

Personally I'd sort my auto votes out if I were you to guarantee a little return..... A few tweaks here and there and you might be earning another 1-2 SP a day.... that's a dollar or two a day btw.

I tend to obsess with this sort of passive income quite a lot, I like to get the easy return passive things sorted first of all... otherwise it's a massive 'opportunity cost' leak if you know what I mean.

I'm currently annoyed that I didn't set up a 'high interest account before my flat sale - even at the highest rate 1.3% - if you put £85K in there (the max that's guaranteed against loss), that's actually £3 a day interest - which I'm currently losing... that's the kind of thing I'm talking about - 20 mins to set up the account, for £3/ day return.... fabulous return on time investment.

I think your ROI is very generous, I'll have to check it out... it's certainly in line with smartsteem/ minnowbooster... I might even delegate more, evil investor bastard that I am!

Interesting, I have been thinking about some of these strategies myself, especially after noticing my curation rewards nearly doubled after automating accounts that I regularly vote for anyway. I have some delegated steem, but I haven't looked at the rewards/benefits yet.

I've been keeping an eye on the returns from delegation. It's just rational to take advantage of the opportunities! However it's also nice having some significant vp at your disposal. Its just a mattet of balance at the end of the day.

Remind me - what's evil about smartsteem?

There's very little in the way of quality control over who can buy upvotes.

I found it interesting how you outlined the different strategies and methodology that works for you. You painted a realistic picture of this Steemit ecosystem and provided insight from an investor’s perspective. I have invested as well into the platform, but on a smaller scale. I would definitely need to analyze as you did on the pro/con before investing more. My focus had always been in community growth and helping others but that is small growth if we are to be honest and compare with the other available strategies.

I like the community aspect too, and it's a very important part of my time here... I've been a bit out of the loop for the last couple of weeks, just busy moving house and with transitioning, in a position now though to get back on the community train, well almost: just another couple of days of 'moving chores' left to do.

Good luck with the unpacking. Moving is always tough. That could be why our “move” has been almost a year in process. I think the hard part is breaking away from the comfort zone. Easier to maintain the status quo but not necessarily smarter.

The community aspect is definitely my reason for coming back. It is definitely not my earnings!

All the best to you at your new place. Happy retirement!

Yes it's pretty stressful, right time to move on for me for sure though. Thanks for the kind words.

Nice breakdown @revisesociology. I can see how the different methods work depending on the level you're at. Officially I'm still a plankton. I still am only at my original 15SP. Soon it will be all mine! Nothing belonging to Steemit, itself. I think its a pretty good accomplishment for someone that doesn't have the means to add funds to their wallet.

I am finding out at this point. I guess I go with what you describe at 50/50 between posting and curating. Since I've done that I've seen vast improvements on income. For someone at my level @dustsweeper is a must!! it does have that much of an impact on voting. I also started following a curation trail (a very small one) I don't know if this was the right way but everything doubled within 2 months. .

It does take time to work your way up, I personally found it a much more enjoyable experience on here when I vested up to 500 SP, then you start to grow much more quickly.

Curation trails work well I think.

I would imagine it is. I'll get there. I have no doubt about that. I've been active almost everyday for more than 6mos. Not sure if it's a habit or addiction LOL.

I'm sure there are more ways to earn from Steemit than these. But I'm curious, after a year on Steemit, the best you can hope for is $100/month steady income, especially with the large investment you've just made? I'm guessing you can probably do better than that. Are you planning to power down during that time or keep your earnings in SBD?

That may be a typo... I meant £100, so $140 ish dollars, and that'll be matched in sp rewards which I wouldn't cash out.... so nearer $300 total return per month, but only cashing out half.

I've also been very cautious with my calculations.

I'll not be powering down, but extracting most of the sbds I earn from Sept.

Yes you can do better than steemit - this is still much < 5% of my TNW.

This is so interesting! It actually got me to read a post on steemit for the first time in a while. I'd like to see an update at the beginning of October on how you did. I wish you the best of luck with the endeavour and hopefully much more than $100 in the long haul.

Hey thanks - my gut feeling is that I'll smash my £100/ month goal!

I hope you will, that would be awesome!

Well we seem to have things in common, out of work, added some more SP recently.. and.. well I have some holdings in Pharma and Tobacco companies :)

I'm not a fan of bots, but I used to use them, each to their own.

Did you turn up at SteemCamp Brum and could'nt get it, or was that someone else?

Some of the strategies you mention might be deemed as 'cynical strategy', but its just a human nature thing really and reciprocation. I cant bring myself to up-vote junk though however 'big' the OP may be.

I cant see this as a way to earn a living off 5000SP, but I'll keep an eye on your progress.

No it's no way to make a living, just part of a diversified strategy - and you never know, your invesment might be worth 5× what it is now in a couple of years.

My main job from now on will be my main blog/ online tuition - run through WP - already brings me in ~ £1200 a month. I can live on that.

It was me that failed to get into steem camp yes - I ran out patience with walking around the block and just went home! Still had a nice day out. What can I say, I like my own company.

A shame, as I was there. Maybe next time eh?

P.S. What a awesome breakdown of your strategies. @insideoutlet

Interesting read @revisesociology, I’m still very new to Steemit and trying to navigate through the waters and this post opened my eyes to some new strategies.
