My Thoughts on the Next Hardfork ProposalsteemCreated with Sketch.

So earlier today @steemitblog has released a new hardfork proposal with a lot of fixes and features, and I will share my thoughts on them here. Here is the full article:

Removing Over Posting Reward Penalties

I don't think this is such a good idea. This will introduce a lot of spammers, and people will be incentivized to push out low quality content. Furthermore it increase the inflation further, which is already a huge drag on the STEEM price.

Single Payout Period (7 days)

A good idea, however then the Promotion Tab should also be promoting the article for 7 days, otherways it's out of synch. I agree that a lot of good content doesn't get picked up. I can say that from experience. So giving more time for people to parse and read, is good. But the Promotion side should be extended as well.

Comment Payout independent of Discussion

No comment here. But the comment section is also pretty slow after a lot of comments come in. You might want to fix the freezing/slowing down of that.

Removing the Comment Nesting Limit

Yes this is a very old problem that needs to be fixed.

Allow Editing of any Past Post or Comment

This is utterly wrong. What is the point of a blockchain if past posts can be edited? The posts should be left there as they are, otherwise centralization is introduced, and a malicious entity hacking everyone, could vandalize everyone's posts. Potentially deleting every single post from the blockchain, if they can attack the network. This introduces a lot of problems.

Removing Proof of Work

Agreed, Steemit is more social, and has an active community, so the POS system is much more fitting here. The wealth is pretty evenly distributed across the whales, so a 51% attack is unlikely.

Multiple Arbitrary Beneficiaries to Reward Payouts

Does this mean a referral system is now introduced? This sounds very interesting.

So I think this hardfork will be overall a positive benefit to Steemit, however I have a problem with the editable posts thing.

Also I think that hardforks should be less packed, so that people can individually vote on things. If you pack 99 things that people like and 1 thing that they don't, the thing will pass, however if that 1 thing creates huge problems, like this editable thing here, then it can be problematic.

This change will not change inflation at all. Inflation is a fixed rate regardless of how it is distributed.

Also, at the time we implemented this rule there was not good feed/follower/mute options.

People posting things isn't the issue, it is how people vote and what gets discovered. When there is a flood of content it will be more important than ever to get good followers.

4 is very small when you think about it. Over a week-end it is really to come up with 4 subjects. Maybe putting a limit to something like 10 would make everyone, if not most happy: low spamming and more posting flexibility.

I see, so it's a fixed cap on inflation, for a period of time ,and that gets distributed between voters/authors accordingly.

Can you please comment on the editable post feature. What if people giving out their posts keys to curation services (like most curators), get their keys compromized one way or the other, then their posts could be vandalized by malicious entities.

At least there should be some sort of rollback feature there, or a versioning system, as suggested by @fulltimegeek, and which is already present in most word editing software.

I dont see the issue with allowing editable posts. All that would be edited is what is presented to the end user (the reader). If there was a malicious attack a feature could be built in to allow you to roll back your posts to a previous point in time. The benefit of allowing editable posts would outweigh the risks, in my opinion. That is

  • It would make the platform more intuitive particularly for migrants from other platforms
  • Allow you to update out of date posts

This post has been ranked within the top 50 most undervalued posts in the first half of Jan 11. We estimate that this post is undervalued by $5.68 as compared to a scenario in which every voter had an equal say.

See the full rankings and details in The Daily Tribune: Jan 11 - Part I. You can also read about some of our methodology, data analysis and technical details in our initial post.

thanks for letting me know about this

Allow Editing of any Past Post or Comment

I'm not exactly sure how the Steem blockchain works under the hood due to my Steemit addiction, but if it's anything like a version control system (eg. git, subversion) it should be capable of fetching the original post unmodified.

I don't get the "editing post" point at all. Can't you trace back everything?

I think Steemit should show a way to go to previous version of a post or at least properly show that it has been edited. Seriously, if it is not here, another website will emerge doing that. I really think that leverage an open social media on a blockchain.

Or people could choose what posts can be editable and what posts can be final.

For example , I gave out my posting key to auto curators, and if that key gets compromized, then they can vandalize my posts, that I worked many hours to put together.

Sorry to ask this kind of unrelated question on your post (liked and upvoted btw). But I can find an answer to my question about why in the Steem Dollars area of wallets there is a (+900.00 in conversion) but you can't do anything with it. What is this? Again do not want to spam! Just don't know where to ask... :)

I think that happens when you convert SBD into Steem or vice versa. It takes 7 days to finalize the conversion.

What if you didn't convert anything? Its just always like that? with SBD "in conversion"? It said there was +900 SBD in conversion giving my account a total of $1500 - then I moved $40 out of SBD and now my account says its worth $181.00 - this makes no sense. Is there a place to ask people?

I dont know why. But there is also a variable exchange rate, like it converts it on the 7 day average price, so maybe that rate got updated every day. But I really dont know.
