WHALES AT WAR – And Why It’s Probably Good for the Rest of Us

in #steemit7 years ago (edited)

A large number of us have always been aware that there are some obvious differences of opinions between various whales within the steemit community. Periodically, the situation escalates a bit, and a lot of opposing points of view are shared and situations are discussed, often with no agreement reached.

Before I continue, I do not write this as a supporter of any one specific whale. Also, I do not write this to condemn any whales. Over my time on steemit, I’ve had many whale upvotes for which I am grateful. However, I know none of the whales personally, so I can make no definitive judgment calls on any of them.

WHY THE WHALE WARS ARE BENEFICIAL TO STEEMIT

Ultimately, there is a more value in a system where one person does not have complete control, or all the say. The differences of opinions about certain subjects testify that each whale is more than free to think through various situations on their own and draw their own conclusions. When these differences are discussed in posts and comments, then it allows the rest of us to be exposed to a wide range of opinions and thoughts on these matters, which helps us gain more accurate understanding of the situations and the various options for dealing with them.

This freedom of expressing ideas is healthy for our growing community. Far too often, throughout the history of mankind, a society is only exposed to one idea and all opposing ideas or thoughts are silenced. This technique is used to ensure that the one in control stays in control and that no one even entertains other options, at least not out loud.

However, if real solutions are to be found, or the best approach or method reached, a difference of opinions should be expressed. Contrary ideas must be heard. Varying thoughts on the matter should be shared. Thankfully, this is what we see happening on steemit at every level, even amongst the whales.

OUR BEST INTEREST

Not every situation has a solution, and not every issue can be resolved. If we are free to think for ourselves, then we are free to disagree with one another. Often, certain situations discussed are simply used as examples of what could be a much larger problem long-term, so often there is much more to be considered than simply “solving the problem at hand” or “resolving the current issue.”

I know that others are free to believe what they want about the effect of whales disagreeing with one another, but @papa-pepper thinks that it is good sign of the distinct difference that steemit brings to the table as a platform.

I don’t think that any whale wants to see this platform fail, so we must remember that the varying opinions may all have the same goal in mind, the future of steemit.

Refreshing perspective. It is an interesting experiment to watch play out.

Experiment is a good word. We're all part of one giant new social experiment by using steemit, IMO. Solid post, @papa-pepper :D

We whalely need different kinds of whales to support different types of content.

Lol, great point!

Hi @papa-pepper
I agree with your view.
Further to your view, we must remember that the whales have a lot of money invested in steemit, thus I am sure that all of them have the best intentions to ensure steemit succeeds.

Yeah, they have more invested than a lot of us!

Hi Papa! Just saying good morning :)

Had a few rough days ... but back on again and lovely to see your thoughtful posts. Your kindness always shows through-and that's what helps to make steemit an actual community and not just a writing forum :)

Watching this play out with the smaller fishes... these days it might be safer to be down on the food chain! And you're absolutely right, diversity of opinion is good for our habitat!
