before answering this question you must know first some obvious information about facebook.
1)the privacy was compromised cause of the use of the Facebook for all the 2 billion people information and behavior for the advertising industry.
2)the isolation of some people from the real world and dependancy on the virtual world that the Facebook created
3)the seeking for validation throw the fake lifestyle, showing only the good side of the personal life.
4)controlling the outcome of the political desition of the most of the world countries
throw spreading fake news and depending on the influencers and some different strategies, to spread the rumors.

And now after telling you about some disadvantages of the facebook nowadays
even if the intention of the creator of the facebook 14 years ago was to connect the people by easier ways but the facebook grows and became this giant that can control many aspects of our lives.
There are some rumors about closing or deleting facebook entirely by the owner of the facebook

I wish it's true. A lot of people have lost their minds to social media.
Facebook, and indeed al other social media platforms are quickly getting outdated. And unlesss they re-examine their businesss mdoels, they will die a natural death. The Zukerbergs don't even have to close them down. They wil simply die a natural death.
We have entered a new era of social media. An era in which social media is premsied on more than just connecting people, but sharing monetary value through the construction of those connections.
And unless social media platforms such as facebook, can come to terms with the trend of the times, and re-allign their objectives and practice, they will not see many days from today.
Take this example. If presented with the two platforms, namely steemit and facebook, with everything about each well explained, which platform is someone, anyone likely to opt for?
Your guess is as good as mine. It is steemit. You know why? Because steemit, more than offer what the likes of Facebook offer, additionally offers value for everything done.

but give the user more ability to contact others privately in an easy way like the messenger in facebook as an example.
True. There are some features steemit could borrow. Although in regard to that one of enabling contact with others more privately, in my opinion, would do more harm to the platform.
I think that one of the strengths of steemit as a platform, is its 'Transaprency'
By making sure that every transaction is in the open, people are comtrolled from colluding or doing bad things behind curtains. For a money incentivised social media platform, this transparency is in my opinion important

Facebook has actually been beneficial in connecting people across the world. But like you said, it has succeeded in disconnecting so many people from the real world which is really not a good result. Secondly, facebook doesn't offer any kind of financial incentive to its users.
Well, I'll just keep my fingers crossed and see how it all ends.
if you want to make money throw Facebook it is possible but it is not street forward like steemit.

The only reason I keep FB is for messenger really so I can talk to my family. I guess I could just protest and use Skype, but it is much easier using messenger.
The content on FB has declined rapidly and I really enjoy the content on Steemit much more alot more thought goes into it. Amazing what financial incentives can do

Once there was Orkut, then facebook now we have whatsapp etc.
It mean a world without facebook is possible but a world without social media is unthinkable.
