As for why growth in new sign-ups are rapidly outrunning growth in active users, I fear it's because a lot of new users are rushing in here - or are being hard-sold into rushing in here - on the expectation that they can get rich just through upvoting (curating.) When they find out the can't, they get frustrated and become inactive.

Of course: if "active users" include people who upvote only, upvote without posting or commenting, then I'm wrong.
