Possible Bug In Steemit Front-EndsteemCreated with Sketch.

in #steemit9 years ago

Like virtually everyone else, I eagerly awaited the most recent hard fork. Unfortunately, now that the fork has passed, I've sadly discovered a possible bug that kicks in when I hit "Reload". (I'm using Chrome)

Whut's With Muh Feed?

LIke many folks here, I use my feed to keep track of other posts. Like I suspect many folks do, I've become used to clicking "Reload" to get the most recent posts loaded. Sometimes the auto-refresh works; sometimes it doesn't. That's part of life on the Internet.

Until the hardfork, this wasn't a problem. But after the hardfork kicked in, I noticed something weird. "Muh feed" wasn't spitting out content like it used to. So I went to my Wallet page and was shocked to discover that I was only following nine people!

I didn't take a screenshot at that time, because I figured it was just one-off weird. Instead, I clicked the "Followers" link to refollow everyone who followed me. I clicked the buttons fast, which got me some of those error messages; I clicked 'em slow, in one run deliberately slow (counting to five after each click); I tried several times. After all those tries, I managed to follow everyone who followed me - until I hit "Reload." Then, I saw the people I followed shrink to sixty.

Can't Get Above Sixty

This morning, after seeing the same sixty, I did use screenshots.

My header (if you will) as of 10:20 AM ET today, Dec. 8th 2016. In case the numbers are too small, I have 146 followers but I'm only following 60.

Two minutes later, after I clicked the "146 Followers" link, which pulls up the page with the buttons that enable me to follow back my followers:

Two minutes afterwards, and after I slowly clicked the first seven "Follow" buttons:

In case you can't see, my follows increased by seven. That's as it should be :)

But after clicking "Reload" again, the number of people I'm following shrank back to the original 60:

and surely enough, my "Followers" page has reset:

This has happened several times, starting yesterday afternoon. The above screenshots show the most recent reset.

Browser's Fault?

As I said above, I'm using Chrome. Although the appearance of this glitch does dovetail with the most recent hard fork, it could be a Chrome problem. More specifically, it could be a Chrome caching problem. So before typing this report, I tried a couple of standard tricks: clearing my browser history for the last 24 hours (done yesterday evening ET) and hitting control-F5 for a hard refresh (this morning). Neither fixed the problem.

I also checked if it were Chrome by trying to sign in via Internet Explorer last evening. Using that browser, I couldn't sign in at all! Even after entering my username and clipboarding in my password via Keepass, the "Login" button wouldn't activate.

Is It Just Me?

Granted: my woes could be chalked up to an inadequate desktop. (I'm using an old underpowered rig, which I'm on the verge of replacing.) It could be "just me."

So I'm asking everyone who's reading this: please check your Following count. Do you see any weird changes? Did you see your number shrink? Do you see a change after you Reload/Refresh your page?

Also, please try adding to your follows via the "x Followers" page. Try following your unfollowed followers via this page:
https://steemit.com/@[your username]/followers .
After you've added a few, hit Reload or Refresh. Does Reload/Refresh void out any changes?

Or Is It A Real Bug?

Even though it could be "Just Me", the front-end still acted up at or around the time the hard-fork was engaged. Please see if something funny is going on with your own "control panel" (if you will.) I've already read a button-related bug report by @shla-rafia , which has to do with the "Mute" button. He said that he muted someone else but steemd said he was following the person he muted. Although his bug report deals with a different functionality than mine, it does also deal with the buttons not working as they should.

So please check your own controls, especially the button controls, to see if you can reproduce either.

Thanks!

It's a bug. I logged out and in and it's still there, super low.

It's a visual bug. The followed people are still there on the blockchain. You can check on SteemDB. SVK isolated it to a particular issue in the code that prevents people seeing their own followers correctly but other people can see your page with the right numbers. We will have to wait until they fix the code.

Thank you! So in a way, it is just me....

(I figured it was in the front end.)

Well it is a bug but it only affects you when you view your own homepage. You can see the real numbers on everyone else's pages just not your own. That's what I understand but I am not a programmer.

Several people posted yesterday with the same complaint...Don't ask me, I don't even know what a hard fork is!

Thank you!

My SP hasn't budged in over 4 hours.

Did you try hitting Refresh/Reload?

Countless times. It has finally moved .003 (since 6:30ish EST)

Yep: thanks for confirming it's not just me.
