Why Downvoting is a necessary action many users are afraid to use!!!!!
Welcome back to another vlog by your by your boy @mrviquez Today I picked up a camera and just started speaking my mind. I have only been on the platform for two months and have not had to ever downvote anyone. There have been many post and comments where I felt a downvote was needed but never acted on it. I guess I feel the same fear any other user feels. No one wants to be that "GUY or GIRL" that becomes the single downvoter. Most people are afraid of getting targeted by other users with greater Steem Power. I myself do not have a huge amount of SteemPower and I will be the first to admit that I am scared of getting into a downvoting war with another user.
But there comes a time when we must all begin to flex that muscle on here. It is not our job to go around downvoting but it is our responsibility to help keep this beautiful platform of ours clean and free of scammers and spammers. At this very moment it is not a huge problem. But with the steady rise of new users signing up to the platform the tricksters are inevitably going to find their way in. The one thing we have on our side is that most true scammers and spammers have low SteemPower. So anyone who has been on Steemit posting and earning awards should easily be able to downvote and scammers on here.
I really have not seen many scam post but what I do see all the time is scam and spam links. If these blood sucking parasites constantly receive backlash from the true Steemit communities we will be able to drastically lower the amount of garbage post taking up space on out revolutionary Blockchain.
So I promise that from this day forth I will do my part to help keep our platform free of spam and scams!!!!! Will you all do the same?

Downvoting isn't neccessary really, facebook once considered adding the dislike button ( same like downvote button) but they found it offensive according to their survey results. If steemit must go mainstream and take over centralised social communities, it needs more of community building which is built on tolerance, love and selfless people.
Reddit which steemit was modelled after has downvote button, reddit users have horrible expereince with downvote button. Also we should take into account how whales with huge steem power can misuse such downvote button, the flag button is doing a great damage to some people already.
But what do i know.
Yes you are right the downvote button can be abused. But if there was no downvote button Steemit would not be what it is today.
A flag button doesn't do the work still?

Very valid points. Scammers for sure. I would also say down vote the porn and obvious plagiarism.

I see the downvote more of a way for the community to regulate itself. As Steemit grows bigger, there will be a greater chance for posts and comments to be "downvote worthy." In that sense, I think the downvote would be necessary too.
