Caribbean Dream....

Hi Steemit,

My journey started when i was sitting in my geography class in 1988 and i was trying to listen to my teacher Mr Dunit, who had a stutter, now i dont take anything away from anyone who has a stutter especially when they teach secondary school kids in a small scottish town hidden away in the mountains, you can just imagine the grief he used to get from a bunch of ill mannered teenagers in high school, so i used to take advantage of these moments and it gave me a chance to escape for a time in each class when it was in turmoil and as he lost control.

I was at the time hiding my windsurf magazine underneath my flip up wooden desks we used to have in those days , and as soon as i had a chance i would open it and browse through the many different destinations around the world with tropical climates and beautifully tanned sports enthusiasts, and i would dream of one day being with them enjoying the same beach life i had always dreamt of, instead i was looking out the window at big Oak trees bent over side ways witht the 40 mile an hour winds and horizontal rain which from what i remember was a nice day for scotland at any given time, Mr dunnit called me back to reality and i closed my desk and looked forward.

I continued to study as hard as i could until one day it all came to an end, i then realised at that point that maybe this could be my chance to follow my dreams and travel to those far away destinations and enjoy the life style that many others could only dream of, as i did for many years. i decided to train hard and become a windsurf instructor so at least i would have a head start and be able to apply for a job over seas and seek the white sand the warm trade winds i have always wanted, i succesfully qualifeid and i was on my way out to explore.

I travelled through Europe first stopping in on Greece and then on Turkey which lasted 10 years and it was the most amazing experience ever in my life so far and this just fuelled my passion for beaches and sun and wind even more, i realised after going back time and time again that the endless summer dosent exist in Europe and every year on the dot winter approached, the sea turned cold and so did the air, this was the moment i realised that i had to find somewhere in the world that experiances all year round sun, surf, wind and beaches., so i made a decsion to fly further afield after a top tip from a friend and seek that dream i had been trying to follow all those years before in my geograophy class. I excitedly booked myself a ticket to the island of Margarita with a job lined up to teach windsurfing, also thinking that this is where the cocktail drink was invented but the island was named Margarita for a completely different reason but again it was a nice thought of drinking cocktails on the beach no matter what time of year it was, so i set off for the caribean sea where this amazing island was to be found.

I could not beleive my eyes nor my skin as i walked off the plane onto the tarmac of Margarita island to be welcomed by this sheer heat and comfortablness, it was at that point i felt that i had arrived home for some reason it just felt right, I arrived in the middle of November leaving behind sheer miserabliness...British Weather!!. It was 33 degrees, sunny and windy. This was to be the norm for the next 17 years of my life as i moulded into living the beach style all year round. I finally made it... i still live here today and i still cant beleive that my geography classroom dreams led me finally to this amazing place half way around the world....Follow your dreams and they will find you...Who Ordered the Margaritas?....

Island life can be pretty great (I am from and live in Barbados, I post about it sometimes) but of course there are some down sides of living on a tiny island!

Good for you that you managed to make it to the Caribbean and live your dream.

Hi Jamtaylor, thanks for your comment, i am a true believer of following your dreams no matter how big they are. You are so right about living on a small caribbean island, yes its tough but it certainly does not out weigh the life style. i visited your beautiful island of Barbados a few years ago now, and i have a great story to tell...i will post it soon...stay tuned
