Freckles and Thoughts (Sci fi Short Story)steemCreated with Sketch.

The first time it was activated was on a cold fall night in the year 2022.
After the collapse of all the basic institutions known to humankind, the world became a better place. Not before, as usually things are with humans, falling into a huge wave of rage and despair.
What would we do, now?
Where would we go?
How about the lost ones?
What about the found ones?
Also as usually happens in times of desperation and fear, some folks rose as the only and true salvation. They were hailed as kings, not long before being exposed as fools.
And in that not so eventful cold night, it was turned on.
The idea was simple, we as humans were too fragile in our form, but our content was one of the most powerful things in the universe. After the brutal events and reactions from the year, and to some extent the decade, before, showed how easy was to actually eliminate all of us in a flash, this little boy came to be. The second dawn of men. The dawn of the new men. The dawn of artificially breed humans. The dawn of a mankind of ideas.
The first person to have it's contents transfer to this new kind of being, was a little boy. A really scared little boy. His red hair and freckles were more pronounced as he turned white and had a deep breath after seeing his brother's lab. He knew that he's older brother was a scientist and that because of that he was able to save a lot of people from the events that happened not so long ago, hell he could still feel the smell of burning flesh and burnt debris, but this was too impressive that all that imaginary just flashed for a second in this little boy's mind.
In front of him was a machine. A not so big machine in size. But the biggest machine ever created by man. The most powerful and, as they were about to found out, the most important one.
The big brother, took his little brother hand and started walking in the direction of the machine. The boy's eyes were still amazed by what he was seeing. They stop just a couple of inches from the machine, just close enough so the boy could feel the energy that the machine was emanating. He tried to touch it, but as soon as he's little chubby hand was reaching the machine, all of he's arm hairs were standing still and as in a domino effect all of his body hair were following suit. He looked up to his brother that was touching some screens and what seemed like dials. Not understanding anything that was happening he could only close he's eyes and feel the warm feeling that the machine was providing to him. He felt hugged. He felt loved. He hasn't felt like that in a long long time, so long that almost felt like the first time.
"That feels good, right?" The scientist spoke in the softness voice possible. The boy nodded his head agreeing. "Look at me, now." the scientist asked, the boy slowly opened he's eyes, only to find he's older brother kneed in front of him. It was also a long time that he didn't had eye contact with someone, even more someone on the same height as he. "I promise this won't hurt, ok? Do you trust me?" For the boy there was only one answer to that question and the scientist knew it. "Ok, then. Follow me." he completed with a smile that only he had. He stood up using the boy's head as a support. The boy laughed at this and went after he's brother.
"Sit here..." The scientist said, pointing to a really regular looking chair in the middle of a not so regular room. This was the inside of the machine. This was the place, this was the time where everything changed.
The boy sat down and was looking around to all the colors, lights, cables and scientific things around him. Most of which he had no idea what it was.
"What are you gonna do with me?!" The little boy asked while his brother left the little room.
"You are gonna to live forever," The brother replied while he activated the machine on the other side of a little window. "Just close your eyes. I promise it won't hurt a thing"
The boy did just that and darkness overwhelmed him. He trusted he's brother. He had saved him once, but deep inside he only wanted one thing.
"Please, let there be light" he asked silently in his little's boy head.
And there was light.
And with the light, the little red haired boy lived forever.
