Stop Telling People That They Can Make Money From Steemit !!

in #steemit8 years ago (edited)

Because in most cases that's simply not true and it leaves a lot of people disappointed.

And although most of the time it's because their posts are simply not good enough, somebody told them they were going to make some money and that turned out to be a lie.

There's a growing discontent and something needs to be done about it.

Too many people feel that they've have been tricked, played like a fool ... they did NOT have a pleasant user experience, very much the contrary; they had a negative user experience!

And why?

Because there's something fundamentally wrong with Steemit? No!

It's because somebody created the unrealistic expectation in their head that they were going to make some money, but that expectation didn't come true, so now they feel abused, they feel stupid, they're frustrated ... and I can't blame them!

This while if the exact same person would have been attracted to Steemit for other reasons than money, their expectations would have been met, so they would have had a totally different user experience; a positive one!

Forget about the money and focus on all those other benefits, advantages and unique features Steemit has to offer.

Steemit did create a completely new kind of virtual space, with a totally unique atmosphere, with possibilities and opportunities never seen before.

Stop creating false expectations! Stop telling people that they are going to make money!

Steemit has plenty of other advantages to attract new users;

  • No Censorship
  • Steemit Etiquette
  • Quality Content
  • Emancipated
  • Human Interaction
  • Convenience
  • Dynamic
  • Open Environment
  • NO Advertisement
  • Community
  • Google SERP's

and so many more ...

Think about it for second; online harassment and bullying, profanities and vulgarity, it's a very real problem on the other platforms. I'm sure from the billions of people out there, millions of them would at least have a look at steemit if they were to hear something about the phenomenal, never seen, absolute unique an evolutionary etiquette on steemit ... and when they then find out that they might also make some money, which will never take too long, that's an UNexpected surpise ... let me repeat; the exact opposite of what's happening!

No Censorship

Although plenty of people simply don't care about any of that, because their cute cat pictures never get blocked, but anybody who watches the political arena can get rather frustrated over it, as it does happen, quite blatantly in fact.

To put it as simple as it is; to attract Milo Yiannopoulos' audience, the censorship issues is very important. Sure, let Milo himself know there's money to be made, but his followers don't need that message ... all it does is create unrealistcic expectations!

Send an email to Milo to convince him that he'll be making a ton of $$$ if he were to simply introduce himself here on Steemit, but don't create the wrong impression by telling the same thing to his 200.000 twitter followers ... who by the way would definitely follow him here, because Milo got kicked out of Twitter ... why isn't he here yet?

How hard can it be to find 100 popular authors that are affected by the censorship? Censorship does occur on platforms like Facebook and Twitter. Contact those people directly, and tell them about the money, but don't spread that message around to the broader audience, as it's counter productive.

Steemit Etiquette

This while what I find the most attractive about Steemit, is how people behave here, it's really remarkable.

Everybody makes an extra effort, people are incredible polite here, they make an extra effort to come up with proper comments! There are hardly any profanities or insults ... anywhere. It's amazing!

It's very real and really significant! Rude and sometimes downright abusive online behavior on social media platforms is a problem. And while they all have their own ways to try and fight it ... none of them has ever succeeded, they're all going the wrong way about it.

While the incentives, and the down flag do the trick on Steemit. This should be the first people hear about Steemit!

Quality Content

Obviously, the main reason why there's indeed more and more really good quality content is because the authors are paid, but again, that's not what matters to most people, they just want the content.

And yes, it does stimulate the popular authors to go the extra mile and publish even better content, as they ever did before ... it pays!

The principle of giving incentives is clearly working, no doubt about that. But most people don't want to create content, they want to enjoy it. And that's exactly what Steemit has to offer

Emancipation!

I'm talking about the fact that there are already a lot of women here, in fact ... they're taking over!

Look at the top tags; photography, life, art, writing, food, story, travel, psychology, health ... I don't know about you, but I don't see Dan and Ned's publishing any posts in there ... I do see a lot of women in there!

The amount of women that are coming to Steemit is quite impressive and I believe that has more to do with the way people behave here, the type of content they kind find and of course the quality and diversity of the content, rather then making money!

Sure, plenty of women that are here creating posts with the hope to make money, and plenty of them are doing so very successfully.

But at the same time there are way more women here that just want to read those posts. Most women that are active here, although they might make some posts themselves as well in between, spend most of their time actually reading the posts, and of course they also upvote and maybe leave a comment, but they're not here just for the money. They are here for the fun of it!

Human Interaction

Plenty of people experience the same when they get another $0.0001 vote ... wow, great! Somebody cared enough about my content to vote for it! Fantastic! Somebody loves me ... finally!

No matter how much $$$ it is, for plenty of people that simply doesn't matter, it's the human interaction that matters.

Convenience

The convenience to post is amazing. Anybody can do it, it takes a little while to develop the right skills and come up with your own style, but not too long ... after a few posts most people are able to come up with nicely formatted post, and of course gorgeous pictures.

It's so easy that it's a pleasure to play around with it.

Open Environment

Personally I'm rather cautious when it comes to sharing personal information, but at the same time I must that I do enjoy reading other people's personal stories and experiences, and there's a lot of that to be found on Steemit.

And whenever it is a heart breaking story, I'm very happy that no matter how small my contribution may be, at least I was able to do something, simply by upvoting the post. This while it's also possible to send money directly or use the promote button to help the story to get the spotlight it needs.

No Advertisement!

While Steemit still manages to generate revenue, that's in fact the most amazing part of it. To create website without advertisement, that's in fact easy, it's paying the bills without revenue that makes it impossible to keep running that site.

It's an economic innovation of which none of us, even hardcore steemers can imagine. This is truly a paradigm shift in the internet world. Never before any website has ever been able to create revenue, while remaining fully accessible. Steemit it took it even one step further than that; everybody actually gets money when signing up.

There are a lot of people out there that get annoyed with the advertisements. Not getting bombarded with advertisement makes reading much more enjoyable. Your brain is not constantly being teased and distracted, which allows your brain to be relaxed and at ease.

Google Results

This is in fact very important for commercial websites. The amount of posts that are taking high rankings positions in the Google search result pages is growing exponentially. And for commercial websites to get traffic, it doesn't matter if the visitors come directly from google, or read their post on on Steemit first to then click to the commercial site itself.

For commercial websites that want to attract visitors this is very appealing. They now need to spend a lot of money to get traffic from Steemit, a lot of it being spend on blog posts already.

This while traditionally traffic coming from social media websites have a very low conversion rate, while when people end up on Steemit, it's because they're actually looking for information, not some funny meme. Those people are good clients, the fact that they read the post on Steemit makes them informed customers, which translate in; sales!

Steemit has so much to offer, so much more than just money ... now, forget about all that and upvote my post already!

Sort:

I'm with you all the way. Steemit needs a USP that doesn't revolve around the promise of financial return from blogging. Content is a product, and right now, within Steemit, we have an over supply, and little demand.

Steemit could be so much more than this!

Steemit needs to attract new users by offering them a uniquely interactive experience with high profile "thought leaders", such as Milo, Charlie Shrem, whoever.

Steemit should offer more ways to make a return, other than producing content. Curation is just one, but how about if we could make longer term investments in people? That could be cool - like patreon, with returns.

Steemit is not sexy. The interface should be improved and the UX needs to be idiot proof.

Steemit should allow users to share other Steemit posts, in a fun way that rewards the original author.

you can send $SD directly to people if you really want to support them, or spend some $SD on the promote button to get posts to rank better in the hope they'll get seen and start trending

I think most of us are here because the potential to go viral and make money is there. But you're right in saying that there are so many other benefits. I agree most strongly with your point about etiquette. I've never seen such polite comments sections anywhere else on the internet.

Obviously I don't mind that the possibility to make money is there, but ... not everybody will make money, which is why 'they' have to stop pushing that single aspect so hard and push all the other ones to the forefront

people will figure out the money making option on their own fast enough

You're absolutely right. When money is the only thing people are here for, in all but the rare case they will leave disappointed.

The possibility of making money brought me here. People behave themselves because of the possibility of their post earning. I don't make a lot here (yet), but I consider earning a few cents off a comment to be an improvement over no hope of compensation at all, which is what you get everywhere else.

sure, it's the incentive that's at the core of it, but that doesn't mean that's what they should be pushing all the time ... the effects of it; people bahaving is a much better sales pitch

as long that's the first thing they hear about it, come to steemit because of it and then they find out they might be making some money themselves as well ... that would create a totally different perception ... and less people will feel like they got screwed, but simply enjoy the politeness instead

You do raise a good point about selling the sizzle. On the other hand, you can't underestimate the effect even the possibility of earning can have on bringing people to this platform. The pathway of appreciation I most see people writing about is that they first came for the money, but then came to value these other benefits as well. I'm not sure that those other benefits would be enough by themselves to bring them over specifically to Steemit. I could be wrong, though.

People who do come here do need to have realistic expectations, which is that you make money here pretty much the same way you do anywhere else on the Internet.

well, it's a mixed bag, but I'm surprised that the politeness, and the really good manners of everybody is not topic #1 on everybody's mind ... not even on steemit

it's a big deal!

on other platforms it's a problem, but not here ... it's amazing!

I Wish I could think
I can't think of Slogans?

Hi Again !!!! starting to feel like a stalker !!!, lmao !!! actually it's because you rock !
Steemit.com Where ___________ Reigns !
Intelligence
" " Creativity "
OUR Community
FREEDOM !!!
Truth .... you get it, the list is endless !!!

There are only two reasons I am on Steemit instead of my personal blog.

  1. I can make some money instead of blogging for free which I have done for 4 years.
  2. Being on the ground floor of what is a game changing blockchain based social media platform.

Absolutely ! regarding #2. Just like watching the Inet evolve back in the day ... 8088 procs. & 300 baud modems 10MB hard drives ! This is ALL SO COOL !

where did you blog before?

That's right. Start to be really involved, try to be natural, enjoy communication and getting new information, sincerely approve and stimulate those, who shares useful and interesting for you. Forget about money. And you will start to get it)))

the right things in life come naturally

+1 I just made the comment (Somewhere) ... will have to find it, lol Exactly what you said, We need to STOP saying steemit.com Blog and get paid, it Keeps "Pro" writers from coming, and drwas EVERYONE that comes to TRY and blog and fails to make money ..
Trash IN, trash OUT ! = Bad for all of us at steemit ...
I came here to learn !, I am NOT a writer ... I read 8+ hrs a day ... and yes i do comment a lot, because the people here are VERY intelligent (For the most part) and i love the interaction !

everybody knows ... even Ned knows, he upvoted this post, but Dan is nowhere to be found, he's too busy counting his money ...

Very well said. Glad you pointed these points out. Truth.

A lot of valid points. The fact is this platform is based on the blockchain and incentives is a apart of the system. This is what set it apart from other social sites. I can post the exact same thing on other sites but no reward or incentive unless I am running a business. But your post is very true, I felt like I was going to see results if I use it how I am supposed to but having the whole whales and what not kind of ruin the experience of those that put some hard work into their posts only to have it overlooked by the post that's trending and upvoted by whales.
