What Steemit means for mental health 🤙

in #steemit7 years ago

Many many years ago I started on a cryptocurrency journey. Over the years I’ve mined, traded, lost, won, been scammed, invested and created. Not necessarily in that order of course! And I’m sure there are many other things I’ve done as well.

But what does it all mean?

As I approach 2 months of writing, creating and developing for the Steemit community I’m struck by the raw power that it might have to democratise and destigmatize mental health. IN the broadest sense, Steemit allows us to be ourselves, truly ourselves, in an environment where we come together as a family.

This family is inherently different than any other forum, bulletin board, reddit, social media platform or website (that I’m aware of at least) I’ve ever seen or experienced. We have collected the creators of the world in one area to truly exist in an environment unlike anything else.

Because of the setup, approach and freedom that it affords, Steemit holds the power for those of us in the world of mental health to truly connect and help other people. In the few months I’ve been here I’ve been able to touch the lives of various people struggling with addiction issues (our core business).

One person lives on an Island and does not have access to drug and alcohol treatment facilities. I gave them a free copy of one of our courses so that they can find the help they need when they need it. The anonymity of such a platform like Steemit powered this.

Without Steemit this person would have had to find a way to engage with someone somewhere in a way that didn’t align with their community. Or, they may have been geographically denied via manipulated search engine results access to the very things they needed to improve their mental health.

When the freedom of information is held in such a manner, on a blockchain for the world to see, it becomes completely free. There are no strings attached to your mental health. If you need help you can find it on the blockchain. The technical implications for this are huge and I’m still working on the future possibilities.

I believe that deep down there are some amazing technological opportunities that Steem and cryptocurrencies can provide to the mental health community. The true power comes from not being attached to the governmental constructs that surround our own healthy minds.

Thanks for reading and I’m always interested to hear your thoughts!
