You realize that even if it is BS (which I have not ruled out), it brings new folks to Steemit over Twitter, Reddit, Et al. That is the cool part... not the ransom or pay to the highest bidder... if even people perceive or realize Steemit is a solid platform, they will come.
Hmm, I'm not so sure that we want to make a name for ourselves as 'the toilet of the internet', where all the crap no one else wants comes to feel wanted :-)

I think Steemit can also be controlled, but I am not a tech guy so I can not confirm, just opinionize.
