STEEM Economy ..Beyond STEEMIT.com?

in #steemit8 years ago (edited)

Our resident wunderkind, @krnel posted today .. https://steemit.com/steemit/@krnel/is-steempower-useful-for-other-blockchain-apps

He questions the meaningfulness of STEEMPower (SP), outside of the blogging application that STEEMIT.com manifests and facilitates. Another of our very interesting new Witnesses, @l0k1 has made some very passionate arguments against the continuation of STEEM Backed Dollars (SBD) .. I think these thoughts and concerns point to a bigger and necessary conversation.

On sites/apps outside of STEEMIT.com, SP can be utilized as part of a calculation for some form of "special treatment" on other sites (ie. discounts on purchases or subscription fees), or actions taken by users on different platforms can be upvoted in the same way that posts are treated on STEEMIT .. as long as those actions can be formatted as posts that enter the chain - hopefully not adding to much unnecessary bloat.

Otherwise, it obviously does not serve the same purpose as it does in curation and so on, but it need not. The point of other platforms is to allow people to take the STEEM they have earned with their content and spend it on "stuff". Also, the blogging clients will allow people to promote their offerings directly to the community, to make sales, offer services, or solicit investment or donation.

The blogging/curation activity is meant as a generator of STEEM, and gives reason to people to store it, but the other offerings do not have to do the same, they just need to give a good reason for people to buy and pass STEEM on to merchants, artists and service-providers.

I, like some others of late, see SBD as a hinderance to this necessary evolution, because we want people to USE STEEM, not squirrel it away for interest gain, to augment meager curation income - this very much limits our potential energy and momentum.

Cambrian Explosion Required

I can not help but feel there has been some confusion on the part of STEEMIT Inc. on how to help make this happen - what to try to maintain control, what to promote, what to fund. What is required most of all from the top is clarity of purpose and throwing STEEM at anyone with a decent idea, so to promote diversification .. to create a true STEEM-based ecosystem.

STEEMIT.com must remain the engine, the core community (not 'just' a blogging app) .. where people come to know he minds of those in the community - what they are working on, what they have found, what they have contributed to our growth and health .. and of course to point out how others have done just the opposite - this is what families do - STEEMIT.com is our family's dining table, but when you're done with those conversations, you get up and go off into the big bad world and win some bread .. get that bacon .. create STEEM-based services and products!

STEEMIT Inc. should have been all about bankrolling these folks, big and small, and to improve STEEMIT.com (where's that damn RESTEEM Tab!?) .. but primarily of course, to maintain and improve the chain.

Golos ..

Forgive me for saying, but Golos was a ridiculous distraction .. the name should never have been mentioned by our founders, let alone supported in any way - "we" did not gain from its creation, but in fact lost potential participants in what should have been an ever widening effort.

We can not have a repeat of that nonsense - so people, please be mindful of the issues around Substeems and ICOs ..

Complexity Kills

When something is too complex it sounds like Bullshit!

Think of a door-to-door salesman coming to your home .. he has something good, something that would be of great benefit to you, but it is entirely new . a new way of thinking that can improve not only your life, but each of your family members, your neighborhood .. town .. country .. but it will take 3 hours to explain the half-o-dozen moving pieces.

This is the ideal pitch!

"At no cost to you, earn STEEM daily by having ideas and stories you share upvoted by members just like you .. the more STEEM you have banked in STEEMPower, the more valuable your upvote is, so the more reward you can provide to other posters just like you. If you earn a substantial amount of STEEM you can choose to cash it in, or take it to one of the many other online locations and use it to make purchases. Just sign up .. takes 10 seconds, no personal details are required .. and start posting! Oh, and if you own a business .. consider accepting STEEM ..

... cause we comin!"

Thanks for taking the time to give me a read!

The most interesting use of STEEM Power I've seen beyond site influence has been as publicly visible collateral for securing loans.
