Create a 'Rouge' - ‘Free-Steem’ project that still supports SD$ and SP - Share with the relevant people - Dan Ned Etc.

This will not be a rambling article.

First I will step though some Truths and then we will go though Solutions:

Truths / Facts

Truth Number 1

When the ‘Feds’ sit down and design an attack plan for an information platform or ‘social media’ they often do it in steps.

Those steps range from ‘moderation’ and ‘spam’ ‘bubbling’ (interception and manipulating of the info others see) right up to hosting kid porn on the platform and promoting it.

no doubt in one of these meeting someone asked the question:

‘so how does decentralized social media work?’

And part of the answer came back :

“it’s kind of like Torrents’

And then they eventually agreed

“ then that’s one way we will take it down”

Hence the current ‘Flag’ and ‘plagiarist’ push where various bots have been designed to attack new users by abusing the ‘flag’ option with multiple VPN accounts.

Truth number 2

Ok do you get the picture ?

Those numbers are largely irrelevant - come on guys do you think we came down in the last shower?

let me explain how the ‘Fed’, CIA (or me) would manipulate that:

Step 1 - Buy a bunch of SD$
Step 2 - Convert it to SP across a bunch of different VPN accounts.
Step 3 - Pay it back to yourself (your 'legit account) so you are a ‘popular voice’ in the Steem community.

What did you lose ?
Come on… you just paid yourself SD to become 'popular' on the platform? ?

However this still brings up a valid point, SD and SP are still very useful IF a real base of users come on board BECAUSE of the fact that potential manipulators HAVE to purchase SD to try to abuse/manipulate the site.
This means that as real users come on board and a real ‘economy’ for SP is created then there is even less ‘slack’ to be filled.

IMPORTANT

In the mean time attackers will ‘Buy’ it up (SD) then crash it and talk all about the 'price' and the 'market' and blame the devs for ‘bad communication’ and demand more censorship or demand that the devs put their people in decision positions.

Solutions:

The solution is simple, but I have made some assumptions.

Solution number 1.

Stop crying about it and start doing something about it. This involves a natural ‘front end’ fork of the Steemit platform.

My assumption are that most of the back end of this project is Open Source.
The front end uses Websockets to serve the browser / app

IMPORTANT
This fork should still use SP and SD so it is still VERY relevant to all the developers

However it importantly provides them with plausible deniability that critical ability to say ‘hey we have no comment on this’

But because it very much supports all of the Steem tokens it should be of interest to any real genuine supporter of the project.

The (beta) free-steem project should still be very much in the interest of EVERYONE that really invested in Steem as at very least it provides another avenue for SP to be caught up in a platform.

Solution number 2 (The points and changes)

Forget about the token ‘value’ or SP voting value and focus on the positive aspects (within reason)
Remember this is all a game.

They have to attack and you have to respond but here are my suggestions for the ‘Free-steem’ project:
( I’d welcome others who are genuine to add theirs also)

  • The ‘Flag’ button has to go. there is a simple reason for this, in a decentralized ‘trust-less’ system other uses should never be able to dictate what other users see. to be CLEARER a third party to the information should never be able to STOP a user from seeing something. And no it’s not ‘consensus’ because all of the accounts are open to abuse though VPN and multiple account.

  • The Mute button should allow the new users to go though the ‘ALL’ or the ‘NEW feed and find content to follow and ‘mute’ content they don’t want to see.

  • A Block button should stop all communicate between the USER and who they blocked.

  • Accurate data that should not be subject to manipulation that shows who a user has blocked and muted.

  • A PM system.

  • A notification system of new comments and replies.

  • Tag organization - even restriction of Tags to a selection of already created Tags (but with the option to create a new Tag.) (maybe separate these processes)

  • IMPORTANT a ‘How to’ Tab which show the new users that they have to go though the ‘NEW’ or ‘All’ stream (of different categories or the whole site) and ‘Mute’ the things they don’t want to see and ‘follow’ the people they want to post to their ‘feed’ or ‘home’

  • A customized ‘Feed’ that can be customized to different tags how this would work is it would filter the content of the people you follow based on a Tag mute option:

lets explain with a useful Example:

I follow Joe because he posts rocking news stories and always seems to find the most interesting news from the most obscure and relevant parts of the net, HE unfortunately also LOVES to post pictures of his pet gerbil, one or two were cute but 5 per day it too much!
I want to see Joe’s {News} or other posts but I DON'T want to see his {Animal} or Gerbil posts.
So I follow Joe - Joe appears in my ‘Custom Feed’ and I mute {animals} for Joe.
Now in that feed I just see ALL Joe’s posts except for any under {animals} or even further none except for {news} etc I hope you get the picture?
^^^^ that idea alone would revolutionize the system beyond twitter and many other social media.

  • Name it anything you like i think 'steempunk' is nice but hey whatever

  • Also include users own Blogs thier own 'feed' or 'home'. (or give them an option)

  • also a 'Proliferate' button (yeah i could design social media)
so let example that, it's basically 'RE-tweet' i just read this story about Italian banks (true)
    https://steemit.com/europe/@abhijitraorane/italian-bank-bail-in-the-slow-poison
I want to share it to all my 'followers'
guys this is key because it proliferates source , Quality news.
it's your natural 'bullshit' filter for the site AND it's also how people naturally find and 'stumble upon' the things they like.
more in depth explanation of why the 'Proliferate' or 'Retweet' principal works.

Ok the guy that wrote that article about the Italian bail-ins placed it under 'Italian' maybe all his other articles are about pasta maybe you don't give a fuck about pasta ok, but you found that bail-in story key info, by me 'Proliferating' it to my followers I AM the filter for that shit you like (otherwise you probably wouldn't be following me)
then you can even refine that with the 'custom mute' button (earlier idea)

Summary

Stop Crying and do it.

No one has to be ‘officially’ a part of it, this is what steampunk ah decentralized systems are about - fork this project and make a free system, it has no downside and only upside as it will support SP and SD this will create a real platform for real content to be hosted - then you will see some real attacks ha ha.

The genius of the SP is not in the ‘voting’ power it’s in the ‘economy’ aspect and the integration of it in the platform.
That all comes with a successful platform.

If you don’t share this with the Devs and investors (or you flag it) you are a coward and serve no human purpose.

Very interesting information, thanks.

anytime it would be wonderful to see happen.

Yessir, I'm following you. Looking forward to future posts.

The genius of the SP is not in the ‘voting’ power it’s in the ‘economy’ aspect and the integration of it in the platform. That all comes with a successful platform.

This stood out the most.... I'm not certain everyone realizes this yet. Have there been any real 'proofs of concept' to point to and demonstrate the potential for sidechains tied to the main SP value chain?

it's all uncharted territory - but if the platform is being censored by feds (or anyone) then it will never be successful in a decentralized peer environment.
trust me - you get a few peers and then you get a few more peers and then you get political commentators and 'news' media even if they post under a pseudonym - it's irrelevant.
but that will never happen without the core peers, they'll all just stay in Twitter. because it's 'good enough'

The time is ripe for real alternatives - people are real tired of the censorship.
this platform design has a real chance.

I hope you'll forgive my ignorance about this. But honestly, I don't understand what is going on. Is there anyway you could just simplify the issue for computer dummies like me?
I heard about Steemit from a Corbett Report video, and from the brief description he gave, I was left with the impression that this was a platform that couldn't be censored like youtube, facebook or twitter. From what I'm reading now, it seems like there are certain individuals whose up or down votes have more clout and that posts are all but hidden if some people want them to be. Or is it about the virtual money thing?
I'm sorry to be so archaic, but I really don't get it.

Ok well Corbett was probably giving an 'overview' of the principals of decentralized social media, so in that sense he's correct and incorrect.
in principal yes it's all that - the idea i'm proposing is the thing Corbett was idealizing.

Second :
yes , basically people are using the 'Flag' button as a 'i disagree' button and there is no solution for that abuse apart from eliminating the option. (apart from a series of biometric identifiers) (which i have also designed a system around) (trust me it's not as bad as you think)

The 'power' of the voting is not really relevant all of that stuff is an organization and design issue if things however can be hidden (like with people using the flag button) then that is a critical flaw.

it's important to note the site (correctly) has no Down vote, this they all got correct it is the 'flag' button which in theory would be used for 'extreme' cases of spam etc that is being abused.

For Dummies summary:

  • Corbett was talking about the system I'm proposing here. (ideally)
  • But he got it right in the sense that this platform has no 'central' controller. (no person that decides) no human 'decider'
  • The 'flag' button is the issue not the 'value' of votes, all of that can be fixed with intuitive design.
  • the 'value' of votes is largely irrelevant the true value of the 'digital money' of the site is in the economy aspect of the platform. (not related to voting) things like 'tipping' 'sharing' 'buying' 'selling' 'trading' etc.
  • The 'flag' button is a critical flaw because it CAN let people (when they collude or use multiple accounts) to censor other peoples information, most of that is done by 'Government' or the NSA or CIA contractors, also corporations (no real difference)

hope that helped.

Thank you for that. Yes it did help.

Share this post to Corbett and say hello -

Great post. Thanks tor hooking me up with a link to it. I hope more people check it out.

i've had another 'divine' thought - this above described system would be block spammed - the site would be filled up until the blocks become non functional - in theory someone (X) could create VPN accounts and just fill pages with XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
until the blocks become non functional?

the answer is decentralized storage - :

like 'filecoin'
http://filecoin.io

from the IPFS guys - https://ipfs.io

or

Stoji
https://storj.io

there by the site could be 'free' to use to a storage point upon which you need to 'pay' for extra storage. which would be decentralized.
