Building & Evaluating The Value of Blockchain Communities

in #steemit7 years ago (edited)

Recently I've been thinking long and hard about the value of the STEEM blockchain, primarily in terms of userbase, contentbase, and communities.

Other than being a currency-backed social platform, what makes the platform so different from the likes of Reddit, Instagram, Facebook, etc?

All information on the STEEM blockchain is secure and can be accessed by anyone for their own research and analysis. Is this the case with the regulars like Reddit, Facebook, etc? I don't think so. Not all information collected by these platforms are readily available.

This is why I think STEEM is something quite different. Anybody will be able to study the network in-depth and have anybody else propose solutions and even design narratives for different communities and perspectives. I think this is pretty damn valuable - it's just so difficult to make a good guess at the numbers since this is quite a different ballgame.

Information is growing, thanks to STEEM's 3-seconds transaction time and zero fees - which supports frequent social transactions, much more than any other blockchain-based platforms in existence. That said, there will be a time when more users start finding ways to make good sense of things by studying the blockchain.

I think such a feat is impossible to do for Reddit, Facebook, etc (in this case, they're the ones telling you the story of their platform, and you have no easy way of knowing it at all). The trick now is to find those who know about online community-building and ways to evaluate them.

So recently I came across Richard Millington's works under a community consultancy firm called Feverbee, and his works seem to resonate with what I'm trying to find out about.

Pretty excited that I've got plenty of studying ahead of me, but here are the links. These are highly recommended reads, especially if you're into understanding blockchain communities and plan on operating in them with confidence:-

Here's an interesting page taken out of the Buzzing Communities pdf:-

This is a huge doorway for us all to become fully aware of our domain, a.k.a. platform. Being aware of our own state, we may be able to find ways to improve our situations.

Nevertheless, the datas can say much of many different things in relation to what it is studying and I'm wondering how we'll be able to do decent evaluations, even if we are using the blockchain technology as this evaluation becomes very quickly subjective... Studying the unseen will offer much insight in relation to what is actually happening with us all here on this platform and can't wait to see results of such studies. so far, what has been gathered through ad hoc site to our STEEMIT.COM platform have gathered important and highly relevant information, mostly from some of the same people who have spearheaded steemit.com it self. What will happen when this same information will end up in the hand of people wanting us to crash, as we have already started to see attacks on our system coming mostly from individuals and bots doing their jobs. In proper hands, I believe this information will strengthen our resolve and potency. May we be in that situation before powers push us apart, if they can.

Thank you so very much for sharing this important matter with us all and empowering us with the source of it allowing any of us to move into knowing more about this and get involved. All for one and one for all! Namaste :)

Again data is just a tool. Up to people on how its used :) heres a pretty great writeup i found recently that kinda relates to this matter :) https://steemit.com/fitness/@cheah/the-price-of-iron

I feel like I am saying this again and again: Steemit will be "totally open" when users would be able to explore, easily, the blockchain on their own. Having steemd, steemdb or busy is a start.

Well, that'll take time like anything else - the casual, layman stuff always comes later then it'll be totally open :)

members fighting each other usually increase the activity

The video is a pretty good explanation for that ;>

(A nice series of vids there, btw)

I have to link to Grey's channel. His videos are absolute quality and deserve a watch of his popular ones.

I have to admit I have binged on that channel several times. Sleep? who needs it? this stuff is interesting!

Yup - I think I've watched everything that CGP has to offer :) thanks for the reminder on this vid!

Edit: I don't remember watching this!
