Steemit continues to be as unprofessional as ever
Down for ten or so hours and just a picture of a robot with no update as to what’s going on the screen.
Great for onboarding new users. Sucks, but this type of thing is why I don’t even tell folks about this place anymore really.
Competition is here and in the works. Glad for it, too. Two years of beta and this buggy kinda schtuff, combined with hucksters and hoaxters taking over in their magical circle jerk festivals, has definitely got folks looking and leaving.

I fully agree with you that upgrade rollout could be handled far better than the way Steemit handled it.
Who do you view as competition?
Right now SCORUM, Narrative, etc. Scorum is sports based, so perhaps not direct competition, but at least a kind of alternative. They’ve got a good thing going over there. Once Narrative launches with it’s dedicated and highly nuanced community features, I think it may post direct competition to this weird spammy platform that I still love, but am pretty fucking tired of.

I could see Trybe beating Steemit but I still like Steemit better.

Bingo. I am tired of many things, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that, in my view.
Anyway, I find it funny that some are taking issue with my suggestion that a one sentence notification be written on the landing page during 10 hour outages. Basic business common sense that other platforms already do.
Yeah that does seem practical.
Steemit needs to tell us what’s going on .. I nearly had a heart attack when it said my account did not exist....

I had a great scare, I thought that it was happening to me!
That was extremely frustrating.. really shitty timing on multiple levels. I made a SCORUM account upon hearing a few people talking about it(including yourself), to motivate myself to run more, but it doesn't seem too active yet. I didn't really spend much time there though, however.
I read the comments and saw you talking about Narrative. I don't mind Steemit, especially with some of the better user UI's being created for it out there, but I'm obviously going to realistically leave my mind open as to where this platform might lead. Does Narrative have anything up and running yet? And are there any other platforms you've found you see as potential competition?
you couldn't say it better and i believe that they are not looking to improve or correct the things that really need to like the interface or ways to eliminate the abusers or even something that will make our older post visible and reward us for them. Now it's like everytime we make a new post, the previous ones "loses it's value" and basically the older ones are like trash

I sometimes wonder if steeminc are any differenet to a corportate boardroom... they get well renumerated and yet I see little evidence of thm actually doing anything.
In which case you might be wrong - they're as professional as any other corporate outfit.

Yup. I agree. That robot doesn't look good. In fact it just makes me cringe given how bot-tastic this place is.

SCORUM, Narrative, BitTube, etc, are offering interesting blockchain based social media. At least for the random days when Steemit decides to break down.
It went down because of part of the HF20 fork, so I'm cool with it being down for a bit.

When, though? When on the SMTs? And being down for that long with no notification is shit man, you gotta admit. Totally unprofessional. If the witnesses and coders can’t even do a fork right, maybe some questions should be asked.
HF20 main net launch is set for this spring.
As far as notice, it would be cool. But we know the fork is coming and that forks mean outages, so I take that as the notice. I'm easy to please in this regard because I don't understand all the codes and all. Wouldn't know what questions to ask em myself.
They're miners, so when a fork happens, the miners have to change their software. Some miners go down and that can affect the network, so I'm not stressing over it.
Also, something to keep in mind is that there are literally millions of dollars invested here. Some accounts are worth hundreds of thousands. Some over a mil. I cannot imagine being an investor and wanting to take part in something like this if that was all I saw. Notifications for this sort of thing are necessary to maintain confidence and also to keep folks investing in the platform. If a bank had this sort of thing happen there would be plenty of updates and likely profuse apologies. I don’t require that, but it just seems to be common sense if you are running such a venture.
It doesn’t freak me out anymore because it happens often here. To new users, big investors, or potential investors/users, this type of thing doesn’t look good. Can’t even type one sentence on the landing page??? It’s clear user confidence is not a big priority.
I’m not stressing, but as someone who has experienced this enough times by now, and who used to onboard a lot of folks, it’s just dumb. Lots of folks feel the same way. Shoddy as shit.
This is the price to pay for steem being fully decentralised. When you get steem you are not an investor or customer, you are a part of it.
Sure services where I am the customer will offer better service, but I dont want to be the customer so that others can make profit. I rather have a bit of outage once in a while and a truly free uncontrolled medium.
Steemit is not responsible, they are not running the chain. I can do everything they can do. Sure they could bring better updates on whats happening but so can I.
Running the chain is a witness job and when steem went down I went over to PAL's discord where most of the witnesses I vote for are and I quickly found out what was wrong and that they are busy trying to find a fix. I was in fact very pleased with their effort. If you dont have such witnesses maybe think about changing your votes.
Decentralisation comes on a scale. Steem is on the one extreme and facebook on the other. In-between there may be many valid business ideas. But for me the key aspect is freedom, no censorship, open protocols and immutability. On all of these steem delivers and it is almost impossible to censor any content here.
Worst case all witnesses get corrupted. But then because everything the do is public we will notice and can vote others. If that is not enough, I can simply fork the chain because steem is a permissionless system.
All of the real viable alternatives for me need to have a similar level of decentralisation. I am hoping for competition as that will make steem better, but so far I have not seen any real competition (projects that run ontop of other chains may be promising, but you are not gonna fork the native chain over disagreement in a dapp. Still there may be some ideas possible ).
Providing updates and notifications about 10 hour outages is just basic business common sense in my view, and something other blockchain-based platforms do as well. There are million dollar accounts here, and having been through several of these outages, I feel that the point I am raising here is valid.
I am with you, regarding the advantage of complete decentralization. Steemit, Inc, however, is a business, and I expect better performance and communication. Especially after two years.
Yes I also do not think that steemit is doing their job perfectly. They focus very much on development and not much else. Their idea is to leave everything else to the community and just bring code that they hope the witnesses will adopt. I think they should do much more marketing. But that is their choice.
For the million dollar accounts here, they can vote their witnesses and complain with them. Or they can pay someone to implement a service they want. Steemit doesnt owe them shit. They are as much a major player here as steemit and they have all the opportunities to make this place better. I think this is part of the problem here. The big holders dont understand what they got into. The think they buy a service from steemit, but they are not. They pay to be part of the system and they should not wait on others to do what they want. They are steem and they should work to improve the system themselves. Otherwise they risk loosing their stake and it will be their fault for not understanding what they bought.

I don’t think I said Steemit “owes” them anything. That seems like a weird thing to say, to me. A simple update that the site will be down does not seem like a lot to ask man. Common business sense.
what I mean is that one can ask any big account to provide updates. They are invested in steem, it is common business logic that they want it to do well. Steemit is in no way more invested as any other big holder.
The special people are the witnesses. When something happens we hold them accountable and withdraw our votes in case
Steemit, Inc. is a business. When even a new site like SCORUM is down, they let folks know. Common business sense.
