What are "whales" and what is an "active period" of an article?
Hi #steemit,
I've been learning as much about #steemit as possible over recent days and have come across mention of all sorts of bizarre terminology including "whales" and "active articles".
What is a #steemit #whale?

Q: What impact does a whale have when they upvote comments?
- A: @full-measure When a whale upvotes an article it makes quite the splash! Whales, for the most part, will determine which posts get the most attention and which posts make the most money. This makes sense, since the whales are the most heavily invested in the platform, and therefore have the most incentive to select worthwhile material.
Q: Do their votes affect the #trending and/or #hot functionality?
- A: @full-measure ...the more STEEM POWER you have, the more impact you have. So like, you can't just get 100 of your friends to make accounts and upvote you.. the upvote only matters proportional to how much that person has invested in the platform. And a "whale" just means there will be a ton of STEEM POWER behind one single vote. (There's no specific point where someone becomes a whale, it just means they have a bunch of STEEM POWER.)
Q: How does someone become a #whale, do they have to make a lot of posts or receive a lot of upvotes?
- A: @full-measure The surest way to become a whale would be to buy a lot of STEEM POWER, if you're wealthy enough to do it. If that's not an option, you'll have to earn it. It might take a long time, or a lot of luck, to post your way into being a whale. But there's nothing wrong with being a dolphin.

It's possible, ya. It would just depend how good you are at posting stuff that gets upvoted. A whale is just someone with a lot of steem power, you can either buy it or earn it by using the site. Obviously it's not easy to make like millions of dollars by posting though.
Just checked your wallet and I was REALLY hoping you had like 12 million STEEM POWER and this was all a troll :) but wasn't meant to be :p

I'm not really into writing submissions but I got Whale hugged twice for commenting. That really fueled my interest in this platform and I think a big part of it's success will be a user base that is active commenting on submissions they like.

Another question: voting and curating, is it the same thing? If so, why in history there are strings "curating reward"? upvoting result I see in SP .
I believe curating relates to writing artciles and voting is simply showing your appreciation for content by giving it a "thumbs up" :)
No, writing reward is writen this way:blogging reward of 0.457 SD and 0.129 STEEM POWER for busser/ethereum-twins-war
Curating: curation reward of 0.001 STEEM POWER for skapaneas/so-you-made-it-to-the-top-10-trending-posts-on-steemit-what-comes-next
voting isn't seen in history, it' only values in SP.

I'm not sure how exactly those algorithms work, but ya, whales will affect that stuff. Basically how it works is the more STEEM POWER you have, the more impact you have. So like, you can't just get 100 of your friends to make accounts and upvote you.. the upvote only matters proportional to how much that person has invested in the platform. And a "whale" just means there will be a ton of STEEM POWER behind one single vote. (There's no specific point where someone becomes a whale, it just means they have a bunch of STEEM POWER.)
I'm pretty new myself so someone can correct me if any of that is wrong.

Sure! I'd probably suggest removing this answer from the FAQ .. or re-wording it a little and taking credit for it yourself .. I thought you were just asking off the cuff, I didn't realize it was one of the FAQ questions. Maybe someone who knows for sure how the "trending" and "hot" functions work could put up a better answer .. I was kind of just babbling and didn't mean for it to go on the FAQ :p

The degree of upvoting seems to be variable. How is this level determined? Price alone or does an algo evaluate the post content too?
