Did You Know Requiring Upvotes To Enter A Contest On Steemit Is Not Allowed?

in #steemit6 years ago (edited)

I have noticed one of the most common breaks of Steemit Guidelines is; Requiring Upvoting to enter contests. It seems that most users are not even aware this is not allowed, probably because it seems no one is enforcing it.

It seems to me that @cheetah and @steamcleaners do a good job at finding the Plagiarism and although @grumpycat is not an account I like (I highly dislike actually) this user seems to be going after the ones breaking the "Selling or offering to buy votes/resteems/follows, or schemes that facilitate this." rule.

So is there anyone that want's to be the next account to get on everyones nerves and go after those hosting contests that require an upvote to enter?

Don't Be Skerd

If you are posting contest that require upvotes the good thing is that there doesn't seem to be any negative response yet so don't be scared that you will be flagged just use this information for you current and future contest to allow users that don't upvote to still enter.

It seems that Steemit does not have Rules but more just Guidelines

It is always good to know the Rules, thanks for the information!

Good reminder.

What happens when the rules are enforced?
Do they get flagged, kicked off?

What about the bots that users pay to upvote their posts, is that against the second from bottom rule?

Just curious

The bots are in a way breaking the rule but since its for a profitable return to the end user I believe thats why its allowed. If it were to negatively impact or explicit the users then the bots would probably be flagged.

I am going to check out some dem bots then ;)

What about asking for upvotes but the user gets something in return (akin to the bots). So it's not a contest but a giveaway.

Interesting food for thought. I deal pretty heavily in contests and had no idea of this rule. I certainly won't forget it now.

In general nothing to bother about, especially you aren't organizing any contests.

Good to know the rules.. I've seen quite a number of contest being held in steemit that requires the participants to upvote if they wish to enter the contest..

What action to be taken against them?

As of now there is no actions being taken but should more senior members choose to strongly flag, they would be doing so for justified reason. The thing about steemit is the FAQ is more like guidelines not really rules.

Enlightening information. Thank you.

Whoa, I had no idea. I think the majority of contests I've entered require it. Not that I wouldn't give one anyways if I were participating.

Thank you for pointing this out.

Requiring an upvote - which has a monetary value attached to it - is the same as selling the opportunity to participate in a competition. It commercializes the interactions. It is not surprising that, already, some Steemians don't value comments which are unaccompanied by upvotes.

Most contests also require resteeming which is apparently outlawed, too. Perhaps the initial idea was to encourage basic courtesy. If you enter three contests in a day, that means daily six appearances in your followers' feed - almost like shouting, "HEY, FOLLOW ME", which most people won't. Well, unless they get paid to do so. Or think they are going to get paid for doing so.

The rules or guidelines assume there's a basic ethical code to which everyone adheres to - but as we've seen on this platform alone, that's not true.

And you're right. The situation calls for an enforcer who has the courage to upset people for the right reasons. "It's a dirty job, but someone's got to do it." (I think there's a song with this title.)

Afterwards the challenge will be to incentivize and inspire compliance but without attaching a monetary value to it.

Exactly thanks for using some better wording to express the same thoughts I was having. The guidelines are there to create contest that add content some contest simply say "Upvote" and a random person will receive 50% of the payout. A post like that adds zero content to the platform and only benefits the poster and the one person chosen, furthermore it becomes spam when the person posting continues the same exact contest over and over.
