Mobile Phone Users: A Way To Save Data on Steemit Site (Emergency Measure)
This tutorial is for those in countries where data is an issue, so if data cost is not an issue in your country feel free to exit this page.
This post is done as a result of complaints of a group chat members where people were complaining about the high data consumption noticed while using steemit.

This is just a desperate measure and is no way something to be used on the regular as you are about to find out.
For Android phone users head over to Playstore and download Firefox Browser.
Click on the dotted line encircled by the red circle to proceed to Settings

Select Advanced option

In Show images, change the Always to Blocked and exit

Refresh the first image and you would get this

As you could see, there is no longer any image displayed. It makes for a dull browsing experience, but I guess the cost saved on data could be a consolation.
Sadly, Android Google Chrome browser does not support this feature. You could check other phone browsers that support no image display.
For eSteem App Users
Click the dotted lines to select either Card View (Shows Image) or Compact View (No Image)
Compact view

Compact view selected and images would be removed as shown below

Now go the eSteem Settings

Turn the image off
Image On | Image Off |
---|---|
![]() | ![]() |
Finally the result below

The good thing with eSteem app is you can now tap the image to select an image to view, giving you more flexibility and option on which image to view and thereby reducing your data cost.
But this is an interim measure which as steemit user base grows, we may even get the major telecommunication company to have a sort of Steemit browsing bundle plan as is applicable for Facebook, where you could pay a token for an uninterrupted use of steemit for a fixed period of time without fear of data cost.

Thanks a lot. Just checked it. Hope you good? Keep steeming.
Nice tutorial.
Thank you very much.
Yes o. Thanks for this @greenrun. Is the data saving efficient only on Firefox?. I did a similar thing with my chrome. I just didn't see any change in the data saving.
On mobile or PC? Did you track your data usage and didn't see a difference on use in steemit? If so, how did you measure that? Did you visit same page with same info before and after turning off image?
It's on Mobile. I just base my analysis on how quickly my data gets exhausted after a period, say days. No empirical measurement or whatsoever. Just how quickly it finishes
Ok. Do you use an android phone? If yes, how were you able to turn off images on an Android Google Chrome mobile browser?
I don't think there is any. I only activated the "data saving" mode in the advanced settings section.
Ok, that is quite different from turning off the image. Thanks for answering all the questions. Keep steeming.
This is sooooo helpful!!! Thank you so much!!!
