An essay on eradication of rape for a contest by gandhibaba.
Hi! This is my entry for this contest, which aims to create awareness about injustices in our world and has urged its viewers to write an essay on rape. If you believe in the potential of Steemit platform to reach out to a larger audience and that potential should be harvested to transform our society then, give this contest a go.
There shouldn't be rape. There shouldn't be an essay explaining what rape is and why it shouldn't be and therefore this will not be that essay. Rape is very significant problem in every society and reasons entangled with it vary, but one tragic outcome always is: there is a rape victim and more often than not society favors the rapist by blaming the victim. There cannot be a global policy to eradicate rape, it is not an airborne disease. There cannot be a national policy to punish rapists, that is already too late. The society cannot suppress rape culture, These ideas are not openly discussed. Rape is preventable if and only if each family at personal level dutifully redefine their value system to raise child that is respectful of other's personal freedom to dress, act and live as they please. A society can then nurture these values and put stop to victim blaming mentality; a nation, then may graduate punishments to prevent deaths of victims and at global level we can grow up to talk about sex and sexual desires and needs, putting aside our incoherent metaphors and useless censorship.
The process of rape eradication isn't a systematic hunting of rapists but raising empathetic and respectful children. The victim blaming won't go away unless every individual in society value personal freedom. The punishment of rapist however severe is too late. Censorship only hinders the process of awareness and change.
