What is a quality post on Steemit?
Lately I have been seeing a lot of posts from people who want to help make Steemit a better place to be and attract more users. Many have focused on the mechanics of how Steemit works, but almost all of them have at least mentioned
"quality posts" using one term or another. Some go so far as to out-right say "Trash Posts". There is even talk of teaching newbies how to know if it is a quality post so they will not upvote a trash post.
Who decides what is a trash post and what isn't? I think the old saying here is, "one mans trash is another man's treasure" could be or at least should be, factored in. I have not been here that long, but I have seen VERY few posts that came close to being what I would call trash and not a single one I would flag as trash.
I have seen a lot of posts I disagreed with their political or religious views, many intending to be humor I did not find funny and several that was obviously written by someone still learning the English Language. But I would not put any of these into the category of "trash posts".
Who decides what earns the label of trash post?
To me it seems like the minute we start picking and choosing what should and should not be allowed, we are walking down the same crooked road governments walk down. Attempting to decide what is acceptable for the people to have access to and what is not. It is a form of censorship on one end and a form of controlling people on the other end. Most of the time, I don't care for either of those.
At the same time, I fully understand the need to protect children who may be sitting on mom or dad's knee while they are on Steemit. I am not talking about that type of censorship. But I have read what sounded like someone suggesting they control which religious views were acceptable. Some don't like the idea of recipes being posted and some think all forms of political speech and advertising of any type should be banned.
What is your personal definition of what would be a trash post on Steemit?
I would really like to see some ideas on this subject. I want Steemit to be a success. At the same time however, I don't want to double check someone's list of trash topics each time I write a new post.
What's your two cents worth?
The ones I would classify here are one sentence with nothing more, only a video linking to another person's site (and NOT sourced or given credit), only a picture with no description (not the photo challenges that require you NOT to add text).
If I want to see memes and nothing else, wouldn't I still be on twitter?
I don't know but I can say I prefer to read text and have facts backing it up; if at all possible.
I too do not like those types of posts, but I did a lot of thinking about who would do a post like that.
1 - people who don't speak English
2 - people who have no idea what they are doing and need a little help find their "voice"
3 - people who have bots or who are using a bot service for upvotes and are just lazy.
I don't like the 3rd category at all. But I think people from the first 2 categories need help, not being banned.
I think it falls under category #3, but I believe there could be groups of people working some sort of upvote circle/scheme, milking the system and then when people see the post has made $100 or more, they feel the need to jump on board, which just helps to perpetuate the system.
I just don't see a way to ban one without banning all 3.
Totally agree, some people really needs a bit of help to understand how steemit and all this thing works.
I feel bad cause well some of them are flagged but well, we cant do much more i think, i usually tell them to add some words in their posts, or sometimes i told them to add a pic, as a thumnail.

We need a "Dummies Guide to Steemit". I keep reading everything I can get my hands on to read and still feel like I don't understand 90% of it, lol.

I think the flagging has started to get out of hand sometimes. More like a personal vendetta
I have no problem with people who are learning English and learning to write English as to reach the larger number of members here. Yes, a language barrier can make it difficult to read a post, but I do.
The bots are the ones that I don't and can't completely understand.
If you copy/paste, at least use quote sourcing or out it in quotes using the > before the words

I don't know, sometimes I think this can be a touchy topic. There are people attempting to reach the mass audience by using English and I applaud them for at least trying, but when you have people spamming the feed, it's time to say goodbye to the follow.
You are right, it is a touchy topic. But some of the ideas I am reading are not something I want to see happen. I have a growing list of muted people. I disagree with what they were posting, but there was nothing illegal about it, and I feel they had a right to say it. I just don't want to see it, lol.
A lot of it all comes from just a few tags. I really wish we could mute tags. That would help a lot.

Yeah totally agree. For me a "trash post" or just a bad one, is that ones that post just a single video / picture, and leave it in that way.
I mean, at least add some words or something. But well.

Hi fernowl13 good post. I think you are on to something. We all have differing experiences and write in so many different and might I add pretty creative ways. Most are good adding something new to my limited knowledge. Bots, foreign languages and trash talk aren’t my favorites. Good to see you.
I have a website at www.creationcarvings.com I just started a steemit account and I was wondering if there was a way to promote and sell product through here? I think that more traffic will be generated over time as people can start selling things like on a traditional website through here as well. I am new so perhaps this already takes place. If it does, would someone tell me how it is possible?
The first thing you should learn is almost everyone here is very forgiving about most things, but spamming your website in a post that has nothing to do with what your site is about, is the fastest way to get people to unfollow and/or mute you. Chances are, straight advertising of your site won't go over extremely well either. But, writing articles relating to your website and including a link to it would be accepted by most people.
There are 3rd part apps in the work designed to allow anyone to sell products. I don't remember any names of them, but keep your eyes open.
