Steemconnect is the primary connection api used on steem. I think it was created by busy.org. You should always check the url to make sure you actually on steemconnect. Steemconnect will warn you what information is being shared. In the case of steemhost, we are only interested in confirming that you have an actual steem id.

If you send someone steem dollars, or want to delegate some steem power to them (which steemhost does), you only need their steem id eg @neoninja. The only time that steemhost requires you to pay for something is when you decide to buy a banner ad space. This process is similar to the process of transferring steem to someone else on steemit.com or busy.org. While you define how much you are transferring the actual transaction with the account confirmation is handled by steem connect.

The information about who from, who to, how much and a memo has been transferred to steemconnect.

Subsequently you need to log into steem connect to authenticate the transaction

Finally steem connect returns the transaction information

In about 10 minutes (or less) this transaction is confirmed against our transaction ... which then activates the advertisements.
