What Steemit Can Learn From PokemonGO [Original Content | 10 minute read]

Whether you like, love or hate PokemonGO chances are you have an opinion about the game. How do I know you have an opinion about the game? Because every person in the world has an opinion about PokemonGO.

Think about that for a moment -

Every person in the world has an opinion about PokemonGO.

Now I know it's not technically "every person" but in all honesty it's pretty damn close. When I take a moment reflect on the fact almost every person in the world has already heard about PokemonGO and its only been around for 16 days (16 FRICKIN' DAYS!) - that blows my mind. It's like trying to grasp the true size of the universe.

Mind = blown

How did we get here?

I call this the wild fire effect. There's a small, controlled fire -- then the wind picks up -- before you know it -- the fire has spread everywhere.

What can Steemit learn from this?

1st. It started small. Truthfully I think steemit is already past this point but I think we often forget with other websites like Facebook, Amazon, even Google - they all had a point where they started with a core group of passionate followers. According to Alexa.com steemit.com is already ranked 29,683 in the world (12,776 in the US) in regards to most visited websites and that's pretty sweet!!

2nd. Then the wind picks up. When it comes to an out of control fire, the wind is the most important element. Without wind you have control. And lets be honest - I think each of us here today are hoping steemit turns into an out-of-control fire ;) I feel strongly that we are already well on our way, but I also think we should take a moment and analyze what was the "wind" factor in PokemonGO?

  • If people are having fun, others want to have fun too. Before anyone in the media started talking about PokemonGO there was already a surge of what I'd call "non-gamers" who were jumping on the bandwagon. Why where they doing this? Because the early adopters were blowing up the internet talking about how much fun the game was. Articles like this are great because they discuss the key aspect to what makes steemit unique -- the financial reward system. We need to take it one step further then just saying it's about the money - truth be told it's really fun to contribute to steemit and see a tangible reward. We're already seeing a wave of "non-writers/non-bloggers" flood to steemit and as a non-writer myself, I'm a perfect example of this happening. I've seen this first hand with articles that start with "I'm not really a writer" or "this isn't really my comfort zone" yet they are having HUGE success and more importantly having fun in the process.
  • Stories started pouring in. We've already started to see this on steemit but the concept REALLY took off with PokemonGO. Very emotional, raw stories of people sharing their experiences of how PokemonGO __________. Which has been everything from:

helped me finally lose weight.
helped me talk to a girl.
got my autistic child to speak to a stranger.
saved my life.

Some truly powerful stories started to circulate the internet. As a result people who were read these stories begin thinking "hey if this game helped this person finally lose some weight, maybe it can help me too". And the momentum continued.

  • There became a greater purpose - more than just playing the game. Really what made PokemonGO what it is today could not have happened if it was just about the game. Trust me, as a life long gamer the game itself is... ok. But I still really enjoy the game because it's not about the game, it's the experience. Exercise, socialization, traveling, the feelings of being apart of a group. And steemit isn't just a website, there is no doubt an experience within the website that keeps us all coming back for more. For me the community, the great content, the desire to challenge myself to create better content, and of course the potential to make some money ;) all make this more than just another website. We must remember to focus on the greater purpose.
    Steemit.com - more than just a website

Take a moment and ask yourself what is your __________ when it comes to steemit? For me it's that steemit really challenges me to try and write the best content that I can and I LOVE that it pushes me.

I'd love to hear what others have to say, so after you finish this post please take a moment and share your reason in the comment section below ;)

3rd. Fire spread everywhere. So at this point we all know the PokemonGO craze pretty much took over. Radio/TV/the internet even at work you couldn't get away from it. And although most of us would agree this like likely a fad, there is an important lesson to be learned in regards to what the PokemonGO community did once the fire spread everywhere. They used their power for good. The community came together and began helping pick up trash while walking around town, visiting animal shelters, children hospitals, senior citizen homes - they realized they could use their momentum to positively change the world.

So I encourage you steemit community. The wind IS picking up for us. PokemonGO has showed me not only how fast society can adapt to a new technology but how awesome people really can be. I would love nothing more than for steemit to become the next big craze and based on what I'm reading and seeing -- it looks like we're well on our way ;)

To finish my post with a quick summary (a TLDR if you will) in order to recap the points to take away here - let us remember:

  1. It only took 16 days for the world to know about PokemonGO. While everything starts out small, adoption can happen overnight.
  2. When it comes to adoption the wind (spreading the word) is the most important element.
  3. If people see you having fun, they will want to join.
  4. Stories are powerful, share them!
  5. Focus on the greater purpose - it's not just a social media website.
  6. Once you have the power - be creative and use it for good. Spread the love!

To me the most exciting part of Steemit is the potential for it to become the next Facebook (or even bigger), and that we have the opportunity to get in at the ground level!

I like your views and ideas on this. Might I give a suggestion to leave out the long list of tags at the end of your post? It makes the thing look very 2008-esque.

Thanks for reading & thanks for the reply. That's good feedback. =)

Great read! My mind is blown! Haha.
