How zines and Steemit culture are similar (video)
What is a zine and how is it similar to this place??? Zines are publications that you make yourself, usually on a photocopier. At first glance they are pretty humble, and even kind of plain looking. But zines are pretty glorious if you ask me (and so is Steemit)! They are actually part of a world and culture that shares a lot in common with the Steemit community. In my video I will give you a tour of some zines I have, and tell you a little bit about them. Below the video is a list on what the two have in common.
**correction! I said i made 1000 of something but i really only made 100! :)
Commonalities between zine culture and Steemit culture:
Community: I would say the biggest things they have in common is the type of friendships and community that are built around them. With both zines and Steemit, people share what they are passionate about, whether its art, politics, journaling, poetry, math.. whatever. The potential for subject matter is vast.
Minnows! I think the zine is like the minnow of the publishing world. :) Little bundles of greatness-to-come. The people who stick with their zine projects over time usually find their way to more traditional publication and recognition. I know many artists and writers who started out making zines and are now full time artists, simply because they stuck with it long enough to a) get better at it, and b) develop a following .
Tools: They are both tools that can be used in so many ways, depending on what the user wants. It might be a tool of self expression, information, or promotion.
Adaptations: They both seem to have an endless maze of possible adaptations. With zines, maybe its the shape or format of the zine. Or maybe the zine is just a supplement to something else. With Steemit, there are apps and bots and all kinds of stuff running around here that makes the experience of Steemit change slightly depending on what is being used.
Decentralization: Zines are made by individuals or small groups of people for the purpose they wish.
Culture: There is a culture of sharing and mutual support. Of course in any community thats not 100% across the board. But both cultures of Zines and Steemit are about a type of sharing, friendship, that is balanced with a strong leaning toward autonomy and authenticity.
I am sure I will be able to discuss this in even more depth as I learn more about Steemit! I wanted to share this because for me this community is not just about the money (but of course that is amazing also), but it is about all these other aspects that make it rewarding. For now I hope you enjoyed this post, and learned something new!

Whoa what a cool post! Such a treat seeing these zines of yours. Cheers to you for seeing the value of a hand-made book, and working to extend their legacy. So often we are detached from the artist/author because of the digital formats, and I imagine your hand-crafted works do wonders to keep the artist present in the work. I'm upping and resteeming.
