SteemIt is getting ugly!

in #steemit7 years ago

So, today i posted my competition again. It’s a simple one - the first one to write a proper positive comment of four words or more gets a full upvote. It’s not much, but the competition is over very quickly and there are therefore not many comments. Those that give spam answers first are replied to saying that it wasn’t a proper comment.

I received a comment threatening to flag me from @fiveboringgames:

This is encouraging comment spam I am very tempted to flag it.

edit: lol I just noticed you say

All other comments will be ignored - I will not upvote them (well, they might get a 1% upvote).
and in you sig

The Smallprint (I always try to upvote any reasonable comments (i.e. those with more than a few words) with between 5% >and 20% of voting power

Could you please explain further?

Why is it comment spam? It is simply adding some fun to Steemit - it is not as though I expect to get many comments as the competition is over very quickly - in a matter of minutes, in fact. There are other competitions which generate many many comments.

I don't understand if the "edit" part is supposed to be positive or negative.

people are commenting on posts all over with vapid comments in the hope of a reward. The sole point of this post is for a person to post a banal pleastary as a comment.

There is nothing wrong with this I see flags as downvotes, nothing to get worked up about just me saying I don't like this form of post.

I also see that you have upvoted your own comment.

Of course, flags affects reputation, so it is important.

I looked at his recent post:

"An idea for a bot to help combat the comment spam"

Where he details the problem of getting comment spam on one’s own post and that he is designing a bot to automatically flag comments.

One of the big problems we have on SteemIt is that those with a higher reputation can attack others with impunity. As I said in a reply to his post, it has already been suggested that tit-for-tat should be used again these types of strong arm tactics.

Why should such an innocuous post such as mine be attacked in such a way. Do they really want to create bad feelings in the SteemIt community?

A new slogan for the SteemIt community:

A free community where you have to conform!

(Hardly "free" anymore, is it?!)

Recently, we also had the BullyBot proposal to stop people upvoting their own comments (and, maybe later, their own posts), exactly what @fiveboringgames did.

What next?

No jokes? No youtube videos?

What is "banal" to one person is not necessarily banal to another!

Will he flag me for criticizing him? Who knows?

Thanks for looking at my post and..

... be happy!

The Smallprint (I always try to upvote any reasonable comments (i.e. those with more than a few words) with between 5% and 20% of voting power - this presently equates to about 2 cents to 8 cents depending on my voting strength. Please be patient, it can sometimes take several days before I do my upvotes.

Like on facebook site here are also people (or bot - made by men) who are not nurtered.

Yes, they haven't been brought up properly. They have little respect for their fellow human beings.

Because all of Steem Community aren't creative like you.

Society is richer every second, enjoy it, feel it and be happy for economic grow! :)

That guy just seems like a jerk. I'd say ignore it. I'm sure with voices like yours pointing out these problems, this kind of behavior will not ever become too common and become a serious problem for steemit.

I think that it is becoming a problem. People are banding together with high reputation scores and they can bully whoever they choose.
Thanks for the comment.

I think not everyone has transitioned from the contentious trollery of other social media, and media, and much of life in general. Outside of Steemit, maybe some people only have meannest equals coolest. Gotta shake it off and shine your bright light. Peace :)

Too true!
SteemIt was supposed to be 'different'. Unfortunately, it's seemingly less so now.

In my blog yesterday, I point out that just like a gardener, we nurture and strengthen what we want, and we prune away what we don't.

I am a pretty naive Steemian, I don't calculate how to pack the biggest payoff in my votes and resteems. I do give every authentic reply to me an upvote, and ignore bots and trolls. I haven't gotten enough trolling to remark upon, tbh, which is refreshing compared to existence of facecrap. I hope you weed out enough trolls so that your true followers bloom!

Keep up the good work friend, we may not always agree but how boring would life be if we were all of the same mind set? Keep grinding, keep moving. The truest measure of a man is not how many times he gets knocked down, but rather how many times he can get back up. No upvote required :)

I have no problems with people disagreeing with me. In fact, I quite like healthy debate.

My problem is when people try to force other people to do something against their will, just because they are stronger. It's just not right, and is tantamount to bullying.

As I said in one of my other replies on a different post. Don't I have the right to relax on SteemIt, without having to look round constantly to see which unwritten rule (by a minority, I might add) has been broken? It's almost like a secret police!

SteemIt was supposed to be different to other social media - free of constraints. Now it's getting its own form of political correctness!

I believe in equal opportunity, not political correctness.
