Adventures in Steemit #2: The Flagging System Sucks!

in #steemit8 years ago (edited)

In this second edition of Adventures of Steemit - I'm going to talk about about "flagging". The devs here need to wise up, because this is one of the most flawed systems on Steemit.

For one, I actually like the concept of flagging because it is a way to let people know of crap content, and etc... but right now it's very flawed.

In the past week I've seen much of the disgruntle is due to the flagging system. It's really not fair that one person can flag something, and then it's dimmed. Even if I and a few others upvote the post that flag is still relevant and ruins the post. I've seen it on legitimate posts and used as an act of war by even Whales. Is this really the kind of system that Steemit wants to become? This will ruin Steemit in a heartbeat if it's like this.

When I started on Steemit a few months ago there was a flaggit who flagged a really good honest blog of mine, and because this idiot was with Steem Power it was dimmed and treated like a demonic poltergeist. I reposted on another blog and it was not flagged.

I've seen a few new people testing out the system, and these Zuckerbergs are flagging them down. So, there needs to be some kind of algorithm installed or something that stops this kind of behavior or we'll lose good new users.

To the devs - this is not to hurt your feelings. This is honest criticism. I LOVE this place. This is just a problem that needs to be rectified. You would be surprised how even a single response to this would heal this situation. You're doing excellent work, and I know for a fact that some of you are working 20 hours a day - so don't get the idea I'm trying to jump on the train of others, but am pointing out something that I know will better this place.

Steem on!

That idiot in my case was one and only @dantheman.

At that time I posted that under new account because this account was hacked.

Good luck with your Steemit adventure.

Thank you for posting a very pragmatic approach to a hiccup. A problem must be identified before a solution can be discovered. Since Steemit is in Beta stage, then certainly the door is open for constructive criticism and from thinkers, it should be encouraged.

I think the power to vote and the power to flag should not be of equal value and the power to flag should be 100% equal amongst all stemians. If a post is plagiarized, bots will sniff it out, if a poster is discordant to decency, is a bully or a stalker, the community will sniff it out. Nobody should have the power to ruin somebodies reputation solely regardless of influence, power or reasoning.

The devs have been discussing this on GitHub for several weeks. They are planning to make a change and confirmed it is part of their roadmap. The main thing is that it will take some time. They have a lot of changes they want to make, and while this one is important, it is not at the top of the list either. It should be addressed before the site is out of beta though. Beyond that though, I don't know much as far as the timeline is concerned. Be patient though - many of the changes we are all asking for, plus I'm sure lots of cool ones we haven't even thought of are coming :)
