[Contest - Solved!] Can a VIRAL introduceyourself post be engineered?

in #steemit8 years ago (edited)

I asked myself this hypotetical question and I was curious about statistics. It took me a few hours to analyze 100 most upvoted posts from introduceyourself category. First I read all of the most upvotes posts, then I calculated some statistics, finally fed the text into different text statistics algos.

What I discovered

The most upvoted posts from introduceyourself come from anarchists, activists, pro bono volunteers, sportsmen, artists, STEEM devs, cryptocurrency evangelists, and last but not least pretty girls ;-)). There has not yet been a single celebrity like Kardashians (yet).

Do you think that their posts have something in common?

Algos

I calculated several text statistics to be able to run a contest.

Lexicon Count

Guess how many words were present in the text?

The shortest post had just 27 words, the longest one 4379.

Sentence Count

I also calculated the number of sentences present in the given text.

The shortest post was just 4 sentences and it came from a BOT, a few posts had above 100 and the longest one had 271 sentences. Amazing!

The Flesch Reading Ease Score

Flesch Reading Ease Score attempts to estimate the ease of readability in a document.

  • 90-100 : Very Easy
  • 80-89 : Easy
  • 70-79 : Fairly Easy
  • 60-69 : Standard
  • 50-59 : Fairly Difficult
  • 30-49 : Difficult
  • 0-29 : Very Confusing

Most of the posts are between 'Standard' and 'Fairly Easy'. I even noticed a negative number for one post. The post was indeed confusing.

The Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level

The grade score using the Flesch-Kincaid Grade Formula. For example a score of 9.2 means that a ninth grader would be able to read the document. The median value from the sample is around 7, meaning a seventh grader can read and understand most of the introduceyourself posts!

AND THE WINNERS ARE:

For the shortest text:
@dan-atstarlite/i-m-wearing-makeup-and-i-m-going-out-i-blame-steemit-for-whatever-happens-tonight

An interesing quote from the above post:

I use basic terms and I explain slowly so anyone can understand.

For the most difficult to read text:
@crystaljenn/life-as-a-female-otr-truck-driver-why-i-don-t-want-to-drive-again

For the most confusing text:
@thisisbenbrick/hey-steems-i-m-benbrick-a-platinum-selling-songwriter-and-artist-here-s-pt-2-of-how-i-connected-with-ricky-gervais

Please treat those results with a good dose of humour!

People and not only the content

The most upvoted people are often already successful in social media. YES, they may already have a huge followers base on Facebook, YouTube etc. but they ALSO write good articles. They keep writing, posting, shooting vids, creating new content on a daily basis. With their account comes also a great potential to attract more and more people to steemit. They are also genuine great personalities. They increase overall average quality of the community and they encourage similar people to create an account here.

To sum up

The final answer is that theoretically you also can achieve success here and the success comes with perseverance. People with 160k+ followers on another social media sites achieved this with hard work and did not gave up when they started.

The recipe to success seems to be simple to articulate but difficult to achieve: Try to do your best and

  1. Do not give up.
  2. Do NOT give up.
  3. DO NOT GIVE UP!
