HF19 Minnow Advice: Stop Voting for Everything
We used to be able to just blast away upvotes for everything. Several Steemians noted that this made it worthwhile to upvote posts that we hadn't read, just because they looked likely to gain support and offer us curation rewards. The frequency of that (I'm guilty, too) was, let's face it, pretty high.
Now that has to stop.
Oh, sure, we can use our ten full-power votes however we like. We can blast away like always. But if we're trying to grow our own power and we're trying to help others that are adding good content to the community, we're going to have to be more selective about those votes. That also means that there are two other badly underutilized tools we have to begin using more.
Resteeming
If I don't have much power to give with my upvote, I can still amplify the reach of a good post with a resteem, which costs nothing and gives good work a much wider potential audience. I resteem very rarely--or I did--but that's going to want to change here. Resteeming is a way to reward good work when my bag of Steem is getting low (and it always seems to be that way).
Commenting
Not nearly as valuable in terms of money, commenting is nonetheless a great way to encourage someone to keep going. I don't know if I'm unusual here, but the first thing I check when I log on is my replies. I want to engage with people that are reading and thinking about what I write. Those comments are gold--to me, worth as much as an upvote (though I'd like both, of course). Back before HF19, I commented a lot, because I had only a penny to give with an upvote. I wanted to do something more for good work, and comments was the best way to do that.
Following
People that post good stuff once will do it again. Following is curation, only it's curation of good Steemians, not just good posts. I publish a daily Best of Steemit, and today's edition is composed entirely of posts by people I follow. I don't even have to get off my own feed (though of course I do) to find more than enough great reading material for a day. It also means that I can support my friends with views, and those great posts are more likely to get one of my ten full-power votes.
Just some suggestions. HF19 has changed the way I interact with the site in dramatic ways, ways that are still evolving. It's meant that I have to work harder to do the things that grow the community, but I think it's made those things more effective, and the growth stronger in important ways. What's it done for you?

I agree with all of this and sort of stumbled upon the same conclusions for myself just before reading. Not so sure about increasing resteeming just cause feeds can get cluttered - but definitely going through and really confirming my follows - the feed can be a huge asset I'm realizing but it does require being a bit discriminate, which I was not at first.
Good thinking and good writing. I'm glad you dropped by. What's certain is that we have to work a bit harder than we had to before.
I refuse NOT to UPVOTE you... :)
Oh, what the heck. Here's mine back. ;-)
Winners!! :)
One thing I don't like about resteeming is that it buries my own content and floods people who follows me feed with stuff that maybe they're not interested in.
I wish there was a way to filter resteems on my feed and on people's individual blogs.
I feel the same way too.. It's the same issue i have with twitter
I never got into the twitter scene but I understand that! Ugh
hahaha.. well yea.. if your feed is mostly comprised of resteems/retweets, people are gonna think that that's all you do
Exactly!
I agree. There is so much more that this site can do to make it easier to find content that you interested in and also present your works as well.
I realize the site is young, and I'm cool with that. But I hope they add features like more filtering! :)
It's a great idea. And you're right, it's not a tool you can use a hundred times a day. Like all these things, we have to be very careful with them.
So, when you do upvote and have no $ stuff, does it still do good things?
I don't think you can get down to actual zero. You can get way down in value, into the triple and quadruple digits behind the decimal, but I don't think you can actually get to zero. Maybe you can, though. Someone brighter than me will have to answer that.
Haha. I was thinking, and I could absolutely be wrong, that it would still give the benefit of "upping" the post in whatever feeds, even if your upvote does not give any $.
Might be. I don't know how they calculate "trending" and "hot", but it has to take those things into consideration, doesn't it?
I tend to do the same when logging in. Always straight on to engage with the people who had taken their time to comment on my posts and actually read them
Amen to that. Why wouldn't we?
Right. Why wouldn't you? Unless, of course, you didn't really want to grow big over time, and all you wanted was the quick reward. Those people will weed themselves out over time.
Good points I have taken onboard thanks.
I'll be resteeming this because I don't have a lot left in the upvote department and don't seem to have a slider.
HF19 will take some getting used to I guess, but I'm only here for the good reads and the chat.
If your SP is under 500--this is how I understand it--you don't get a slider (I don't have one, either). So our votes are set automatically at 100% for ten votes, and then they decline (again, as I understand it). But I'm with you on why I'm here. It's a good place, for all the crap. There are gems out there. Finding them is hard, but worth it.
People need to start using that voting bar. I just gave you 3% of my vote. I could've given more, but I chose not to. That's the type of decision that will save our voting percentage. :) Nice post dude.
It's been hard to do, but I agree - a 3% upvote is better than nothing if you ask me. It also will change the way people upvote themselves.
The bar doesn't happen under 500SP, if I understand correctly (and I may not). I don't have a bar. Yet. I think early August I should get there, at the present rate. So for the pools I swim in--minnows almost exclusively--we have to pump 10 votes at full power, and then the percentages drop. I think my full vote power is .20 or thereabouts, and right now my upvote is .12, because I'm using it all over the place. I can't help myself.
But lest I forget--thank you. I appreciate it, and I'm glad we've met.
If you use the eSteem app, you don't have to have 1M vests which is around 482 SP.
Hmm. Then I'll have to start doing that. Thanks for the info.
You're welcome.
I should add that the resteem feature should have a comment box for the resteemer to comment on why they thought it worthy of a resteem to their own followers.
This is a lovely idea. I do this with my Best of Steemit posts, but I admit, it's a lot of work. Your idea would make that kind of thing a whole lot easier.
Really nice post.. as a minnow, I feel obliged to upvote my fellow minnow, but I also want to save my upvote for quality content. I too go to my replies tab first thing... it really encourages me when people comment since it makes me feel that they took time out to actually read and tell me what they thought about my content.
I recently got a reply from someone who wasn't able to read my entire post, but followed and upvoted to support me. I would have liked it if he could have let me know what he thought about my content, but knowing that he supports my work feels really good :)
Right on. This is exactly what I'm talking about. I'm glad you took the time to read, and to comment, so I can follow you. Which I now do. :-)
Thank you so much :) .. i've followed you back :)
Replies and comments are indeed very valuable. This is also the first I look at. Very disappointing if there is no replies. Shows you how important communication is!
Amen. You can't have a true community without it. Passing around money is great and all, but CREATING something is where it's at, and it's where the community will have a chance to grow. Glad you came by.
It's got me using my sliding voting power bar a lot more. When I only had 15 cents to give I would just vote with 100% all the time but now I know that I only have 10 full power votes a day. I'm finding myself making a lot of votes with far less than 100% power
Understood. I don't have a bar (that I'm aware of--you can't imagine how much of a n00b I am), so I can't do that, I don't think.
I think you might need to get to a certain amount of Steem Power before you get a bar but I'm not certain
I've been informed that it's "million vests" that determines your slider availability (unless you use the eSteem app on iPhone). 1 million vests gets you a slider, which works out to about 490SP, if I've been told correctly.
