Getting Stoked for Austin // Street Art Adventures in the Heart of the CitysteemCreated with Sketch.

in #steemit5 years ago

Hi friends!

When visiting a place, I love to just meander the streets and soak in the vibes of the city. Finding cool street art is one of my favorite things to do!

I found myself in Austin about a year and a half ago for work and had a morning free to myself. I got a cup of coffee and literally just wandered around the city with the intent of finding street art. It wasn't a hard task! Austin is an epicenter for both music and art, and so this really comes as no surprise.

Some of the pieces were prominently displayed on main roads, but most of them were found in side roads and alleyways. I thought that was really great because it required a bit of exploring to find them. How many times do we just zip through our day, moving from one activity to another without even noticing the beauty around us?

I’m sure this is not a complete list of all the street art in downtown Austin, but I was pretty surprised at how much I found in such a small radius. All of this art was found between 2nd and 7th street downtown.

I'm heading to Austin in just a few short weeks with my sister @maryjaney and tons more awesome steemians to attend the Global Blockbulders Confernece - hosted by @steemcafe and @larrymorrison.

Tickets are only $99 and it is going to be a blaaaast. Mary and I literally have a countdown until we get to fly to warm, sunny Austin and meetup with all you crazies. 😘

Get your tickets HERE.

In the meantime... here's a few snapshots of street art I found to get you stoked for the event!

I live in Austin! Its a fun place, been here 21 years. Most of my best friends I met here. I suggest going to these places.... Casino EL Camino, a really cool punk/metal/rocknroll bar. It was on Diners and Dives , and the back patio looks like Mayan ruins, and cool bad ass artwork inside. My favorite place in town honestly! Best Burgers in town and cheap drinks. Spiderhouse is a cafe/bar/venue...really eclectic, a courtyard with all kinds of weird antique and retro furniture. The Little Darlin has amazing food, and just about every kind of person hangs out there. Other places you gotta check out, Koriente, The Continental Club, Broken Spoke (old Austin country bar), Bouldin Creek (Great Vegan/Vegetarian). Thats a mix of old and newer places, Have fun! Downside about Austin is unfortunately, it has grown too fast and is suffering from a lack of infrastructure, and honestly I don't think ti will ever catch up. The city did not really do a whole lot protect the old neighborhoods from getting bulldozed and turned into ugly condoplexes. Same old story everywhere tho. Traffic is some of the worst I have seen in all my travels across the country, and there is constant construction. The main North/South running highways can be backed up past 9pm, even on weekends. I suggest sticking to one section of town per day, and avoid crossing town lake during the day/early evening.

Woah so awesome!!! Thanks for all the advice! What’s the best way to get from the airport to downtown? Uber?

Are you gonna come to the conference? You should come join us! 😎

You are welcome. There is a bus that goes downtown if you wanna save about $30 not taking uber/Lyft https://www.capmetro.org/schedmap/?svc=0&f1=20&s=

Looks like it runs every 15 min most of the time, bring some dolla bills cuz Im not sure it takes cards.

Im debating the conference, but if you wanna meet up somewhere around that time I would be down. BTW saw your grunge post and still need to listen to ya. You definitely should check out Casino El Camino, my friend Frap works there and he was in Alice in Chains. You will love the jukebox too.

Thanks for all the info!! Sorry I totally missed your comment before and went back looking for it to see if you had responded. Sorry about that! 😅

Thanks for the buss info, we’ll have to check that out. I hope you end up making it for parts of the conference! I’m sure there will be stuff happening in the evenings too.

Thanks for the tip on Casino El Camino. We’ll have to check that out! Mary and I are actually staying a couple extra days afterward - so we should have some extra time to explore. 😊

You are welcome! No worries. I will let ya know if go to the event.

Austin is one of my favorite places. We have almost moved there a couple of times. I am excited to be at the conference to meet our new friends while staying with our old friends. It will be amazing.

Extremely nice choice of photos!

Hey Ren!!

Didn’t realize you guys started a new account for “Have ya Met”. Following now!

That’s so cool that you are coming to the conference! Can’t wait to hang out with everyone. 😊

Yeah, the other account was getting clogged up and we were wanting to do other things with it so we took the leap a few months ago and created @heayhaveyamet. It really helped sort out everything and keeps people from getting confused. Besides I get to use these cute little bitmoji's!

I am really looking forward to seeing everyone!

Question about the conference. Do you know what the actual schedule is going to be? We would like to start making some plans, but I am finding no information about it.

Aww thanks guys!! I was so excited when I saw I had over 250 words and could use the tag! ♥️

I am sure it will be a great experience as the list of participants is impressive! Look forward to hearing the thoughts and views that come out of there!

Thanks friend!! Wish you could join us but I’ll be sure to share my thoughts afterwards!

Sometimes Mary and I share daily recap videos during the conference - so we’ll see if we have time for that and how good our WiFi is!

My favorite here is the two frogs. I knew a cool guy, Nick Littlejohn, from Austin who moved up here to Portland, OR. He told me a bit about Austin years ago. I've always been a fan of Texas and have thought about moving there. I love the art. That Russian House restaurant has an amazing exterior, the design, the color, is totally like not of this world or I mean country and I like it. Oh, that soldier must have been alive during King Arthur, just kidding. But yeah, wow, I love the body armor. Gives me some hope, courage. Upvoted. Resteemed. I need to travel more and take more photos like this, like a road trip around America. Lovely.

I’m so glad you enjoyed all the fun art!! Those frogs were awesome. I almost didn’t find them too because I decide to head back and then got a little list and there those guys were chilling on a MASSIVE building!

Lucky you. Good work.

@coruscate, Coffee, peaceful walk, and exploration of art is breathtaking combination and definitely street art and wall art should be encouraged more because art will communicate with people when they walk close to these arts. Keep enjoying.
