ZCash Mining Rush Confirms GTX's Steem Mining Dominance is Not an Exploit

in #steemit8 years ago

An interesting lesson was learned as a side result of the cryptocoin gold rush to mine Zcash. It seems everyone with a GPU to spare is rushing over to Zcash and that includes the notorious GTX that has been dominating the Steem and Golos mining queues.

It seems that with the drop in value of Steem, the increased competition in the queue from the recent mining thread fix and maybe the butthurt cries from the community to end mining entirely, GTX has left the Steem/Golos mining game for the time being.

Steemit Mining Queue

Golos Mining Queue

Why is This Important?

What this tacitly confirms is the claim that GTX is using a GPU miner or possible bot net and not an exploit in the Steem code like was previously being done. There was always much doubt about GTX's claims that he was using a GPU miner and not just exploiting an un-found bug in the mining queue system. We now know at least that GTX is burning up some resources in his savage dominance of the mining queue.

For all you aspiring Steem/Golos miners let's keep our fingers crossed that Zcash prices stay high enough for GTX to stay away or maybe even sell his GPU code to @picokernel for the bounty.

(If you didn't know there is a 3K bounty for a Steem GPU miner)

Very well put. You took my mining queue spot! lol What's interesting is since there is this spark of competition in mining on steem/golos now, maybe we'll see some price jumps with Steem.(temporarily)

This is fantastic! Now all we need to do is in this lul develop an open source gpu miner so this cannot happen again. Btw with my i7 quad core in the last 24 hrs I have mined 8 blocks! fantastic!

The problem is ZCash is rapidly declining in price and has mega competition. It might not be very long before GTX comes back. A Steem miner's best play might be to go and cheerlead for ZCash on those exchange troll boxes.

Ah well we will cross that bridge when we come it.

Zcash can also be mined using CPUs, so I'm not sure how this is a proof that he's using GPUs.

I agree that its not proof. For all we know he could have just used the zerocash launch as an excuse to stop what he was doing. Maybe he really has a gpu miner compiled and doesn't want to share with the rest of the world. :)

"I agree that its not proof."

That's why I wrote "tacit confirmation"

"For all we know he could have just used the zerocash launch as an excuse to stop what he was doing."

That doesn't make any sense. Why would he turn off his money machine? It's not like there is an active investigation into him using an exploit. It's already assumed he has a GPU miner. If it was an exploit then we would most likely still see him in the queue. This confirms real resources are being used and those are most likely GPU.

"Maybe he really has a gpu miner compiled and doesn't want to share with the rest of the world. :)"

That's what it looks like. He also doesn't want to sell it for as low as $3K

Maybe it wasn't worth mining it anymore. :P

We should keep raising that in a weekly basis til someone baits. :D

I did mention that it could be a bot net which would be CPU. But we know he wasn't using the standard CPU miner. It is most likely a GPU because he is kicking the shit out of everyone else using CPU.

The debate is whether he is using an exploit again, GPU or mass CPU. This confirm it's most likely not an exploit.

Very interesting, need to know more about ZCash
