A Steemit Health Check - The Current State of Steemit Usage and Traffic

in #steemit8 years ago (edited)

Summer has turned to Autumn and the latest batch of public numbers for Steemit.com are available. I wish I was delivering much better news but it seems the state of Steemit's usage and traffic health is somewhat sickly. The site is alive but is still in a decline. Steemit is definitely not growing and thriving like we know it is capable of doing.

Steemit.com Alexa Ranking / http://www.alexa.com/siteinfo/steemit.com

While still a very respectable ranking you can see that Steemit's rapid growth has peaked and begun to decline.

Steemit.com Compete Ranking / https://siteanalytics.compete.com/steemit.com

Compete confirms what the Alexa ranking is showing us. The traffic on Steemit.com has peaked and is in decline.

Steem Distribution

This is not a good image. Our daily active users are down roughly 25%. Previous usage numbers had daily actives around 4K and weekly 10K - 13K. The only mitigating information I can add is that this weekly snapshot included the USA election day and Steemfest. Those are two big reasons regular users may have been distracted.

SteemDB Charts

While users signups and votes are trending up, posts, authors and payouts are on their way down. While the payouts can be explained by the longtime declining price of Steem that doesn't explain why users and votes would go up while leaving posting and authors behind. Really unique authors should be going up if real users are signing up. I suspect this tells the story of what many already suspect, most of the new signups are not real users and are being used to vote.

Conclusion

Steemit is alive and appears to have a core group of early adopting members that are sticking it out but there is a major problem with converting new users and getting them to stick around. Even though Steemit is in beta and these are early days this is not a good sign. These numbers show something is wrong and Steemit needs to be fixed to enable further growth and regular usage. There are plenty of great ideas floating around to help address these problems let's hope they get adopted quickly.

"Even though Steemit is in beta and these are early days this is not a good sign."

Beta means they should have an easier time pivoting. It shouldn't be used to enable denial of the sad state of affairs.

If we want more traffic we need to be less geek and more joe sixpack.

Don't forget about Jill Sixpack too

yes...that was understood.

Or in my father-in-law's case, "Six-Pack Jack."

I think this is the kind of information investors need to see.

You will never see crypto investors here. They simply hate premined coins. As a blogging platform Steem is bad. When was the last time when you saw article on the front page from (new) author with low reputation number. Bots don't allows that. They already picked their favorites. Soon Steemit will get 'scam' reputation and at that time there will be no more new authors willing to write. Only scammers, but for them rewards is to low now.

Why is traffic in decline? Probably because the changed made to Steemit have resulted in the platform sucking balls. When you tell people you are going to pay them and then stop they go elsewhere. It's not fucking rocket science.

What changes made do you think affected payouts?

lol what payouts?
