Why following too many people will only hurt them (and you)

in #steemit7 years ago (edited)

Many of you follow a lot of people, usually as an act of goodwill, but what exactly does it accomplish? Let's get into it.

The consequences

  • The more people you follow, the less attention you can give each of them
  • Your feed will be huge and overwhelming
  • Going through your feed will be exhaustive
  • It's unlikely you'll see the content you're interest in
  • It's unlikely you can reward your followers, because you miss their content all the time

The solution

To avoid future complications it's advisable to implement stricter follow rules and implement a system to manage your follows. My advise:

1. Only follow quality content creators

But what is quality? In this case the simplest answer is content you are interested in. You might be interested in a lot of things, but in the end you have to make concessions. You have to determine how much followers is too much for you and what your standards are.

2. Do regular cleanups

Once in a while go through your followers and see what they've blogged lately. It takes a while, but it will only benefit you in the end! And while doing it you might see a lot of great content you have missed because of the exact problem discussed in this article.

It can't hurt to do one big cleanup if you notice your feed is way too huge and filled with content that doesn't really appeal to you.

Like others have said thank you for this post. I started here 3 weeks ago and Im trying to find the best strategy to handling the info overload.

Do you have a recommended manageable number of people to follow?

Is different per individual. Just look at your feed and see if you can still handle it and if you see content that you don't like.

Makes sense. Thank you for your reply.

In your case you are following more people than are following you, that's generally a bad idea because there are way less content creators than consumers in the world.

ok I never looked at it that way. You are right so i need to decrease the ratio of people I'm following versus the people following me. I need to be more disciplined when hitting that follow button.

If you think so, then do it :)

Do what works best for you.

being new I was already on the lookout for that, I will pass on the copy paste kings and try to stick with people who actually post things that have a point of view. Cleanup may already be in order :)

Nice picture!

UP VOTE FOR YOU MY MAN
You are right on the money !!!

Quality over quantity,I have a few followers and I am so happy to be in this space with so many geeks and people alike.

I am in a mission tryiing to bring my Facebook friends to Steemit but is easier said than done. With this in mind, I will like to bring quality friends to the network rather than just spamming emails in hopes of bringing s ton o people I don't really care about.

When you mention the clean up you remind it me of Instagram and Twitter, I normally do "Cleanups" when I get really bore of scrolling. Here is a bit different since you actually have to read and consume the content.

Follow me here and if your curious follow me on Instagram or Twitter as well

Follow my Steemit, I have one post so far but Ill promise ill bring more <3

Have a great night :D

Ohh, cool article, thanks for sharing!

I see this as nothing more than e-whoring and the people that do it are typically the ones that suffer from it as they are into quantity over quality. This reminds me of Twitter when it was first released. I have to say I felt a bit creeped out by checking my account the day after signing up to see 10 people following me. At the time the only thing I could relate it to is if 10 people decided to follow me everywhere I went and follow my every action. Needless to say I hadn't been on Twitter in quite some time...lol.

i agree, that's what people do... the whole quantity/quality argument. And yeah, the twitter vibe was what I was getting from Steemit too. I've only been here for 4 days, and it feels like a mix of Reddit and Twitter. upvoted and followed @jacobchamplain. Keep up the good work!

The only good thing is that at least here we get paid for getting screwed and being annoyed by injustice :)

glad i ran into your post
this is exactly what i've been wondering
even put out post asking exactly this - no responses :(

i am in your shoes. i am new here.

Great post for the beginners! Been following this strategy since I started recently :)

in some how I do agree!

Thank you for the advice, keeping things cleaner is great
