SteemIt Feed improvements ideas

in #steemit8 years ago

I think SteemItsteemit emoji.png must be different from Facebook or Twitter. Especially all those platforms are a disaster to organize your feed in a meaningful way for you.

Flat Streaming Sucks

The main problem with the stream is that due to the huge volume of posts and growing amount of people, you are more and more a minnow in this ocean. Nobody is having the time to search for something interesting. There is way too much noise and it is growing.

Of course, many will say it is about the quality of the content, I agree partially: it is mainly about the size of your network, the community around you. (Of course, you always need to provide quality content that people care of to grow).

The thing for me is how can SteemIt be improved to reduce the amount of noise that I receive and that it can bring me more content on what I am interested into and allows me to discover new interesting stuff (and not noise).

Follows a list of smalls things that can make my user experience better.

Custom User Views (+Keyword Filtering) for the Feed

For instance you are following several people, you want to create a hierarchy because for you the content of X or Y is much more important for you than the content of Z. So you can have several views for the Feed according to your own topics, and not just the Flat one. Also, the idea can be extended if someone wants to share its filters with other people.

Similarly, since each post is having different categories, you want also to be able to create your own list or hierarchies around the category keywords. You want to be able to share this with other people.

Comment/Upvoted Notifications

What I found was pretty cool in @busy.org, it is the notification mechanism when someone is putting a comment in one of your post. It is really nice. But, similarly, if you up-voted someone, you want to know what are the comments of other people that are not linked to your comment.

Upvoted/Commented Posts Tab (Discussion style)

It will be nice also to have a tab that lists the posts we up-voted to follow this kind of stuff: we do not want to waste time searching for this. Also, if there is a tab when someone up-vote or put a comment, the post can be moved to the top: it will help to improve the visibility of any posts and increase the opportunities for curation/discussion.
May be merge both existing Comment and Reply tabs inside a Discussion tab along with the Upvoted posts.

Custom List of Posts (Playlist style)

Also sometime you want to keep for a specific subject a list of interesting posts from different authors. It will be nice also to be able to share this with people, as part of another kind of feed. I think it will be also a nice tools for curators. I think more as a kind of hierarchy, not as a flat list.

Feedback

I will be happy to see what are your thoughts about this ? What important features that you want to see in SteemIt ? What do you like ? What do you don't like ?

Sort:

They are all sound suggestions. For me, it seems like every post is just thrown into the ocean as you say. No sub classification. Personally. I would love to have a subgroup that I could easily access. Sure the tagword search helps but still is a hodgepodge of posts.

Also, why arent the newest shown first instead of the most valuable?

There is no doubt that Steemit requires some changes to take it to the next level.

Overall, I believe the platform will explode because it offers two things FB doesnt: money and a lack of censorship.

Thank you, happy to have an answer that I am not too crazy (or may be we are both :D )
Actually, there is a form of censorship through flagging (of course it is in the blockchain but not shown directly).
I think also a main issue is the retention of users: it takes a long time to start to ramp up and lot of people think it is easy money (which was probably the case at the very early start) and after a short trial period they leave.
Another problem is about being part of one or a few communities to grow your network, there is some stuff around SteemIt but not really inside, easy and understandable: I am quiet a newbie for this part.

I agree with you on all points. There are many challenges facing steemit at the moment with no easy solutions. The fact taht there is a hodgepodge of posts without much in the way of classification or grouping needs to be addressed. Reddit did well with their subreddits which allowed for the forming of groups....will we see something like that here?

Since I am not a developer nor do I know about a lot of this stuff, I can only keep posting, commenting and upvoting. If 50,000 of us did that, this place certainly would grow considerably. Instead it looks like there are roughly 20,000 active users who are engaged on a daily basis.

I agree. I hope they will go for this kind of solution to help to structure the stream of information and to have more people becoming addicted to the platform.
