This first event occurred in part thanks to the creation of the Interactive Digital Software Association, currently known as Entertainment Software Association(ESA). The first event was held from May 11–13, 1995 at the Los Angeles Convention Center one of the largest convention centers in the United States.

Responding to the needs of the video games market also with the end to give a professional and serious approach within the industry, the IDSA recognized that needed of some kind of fair for retailers, the event counted on the participation of great companies of the time like Sega of America also Sony announced it's entry for the first time in the video game industry and presented the Playstation, although Nintendo wasn't interested in a principle in the end decided to participate by pressures of other companies and showed the first look of the Ultra 64 the codename of the Nintendo 64.

Eliot Minsker CEO of Knowledge Industry Publications in reference to the event said

Retailers have pointed to the need for an interpretive event that will help them make smarter buying decisions by interacting with a wide range of publishers, vendors, industry influentials, and opinion leaders in a focused show setting.

With an incredible participation of around 50 thousand visitors among them; editors, developers, press and other professionals, the event was a great success, in 2007, ESA implemented a new E3 format. This will be only by invitation and therefore the participation of the public that was not directly related to the industry was reduced, although since the year 2017, the exhibition returned to open its doors to anyone who bought ticket.

The E3, as it is usually abbreviated, will take place between June 12 and 14 2018 at the Convention Center in Los Angeles, the usual venue for the fair, the first 1,000 passes sold will cost US$ 149, while the later ones will go up to US$ 249, so if you want to attend the most important video game fair in the world, prepare to pay.
