Steemit Problems: reward values decay over time

in #steemit7 years ago (edited)

Some of you may have noticed the problem where rewards change.
I managed to capture what this looks like, and have some theory about what causes it, and how to improve this function.

started tracking this after I noticed reward changing over time without interactions like voting, I thought it would be good to get some data points to see if there is a pattern in an attempt to understand the underlying cause of it. You may have noticed this happens across all posts/comments/etc at roughly the same percentage over time, but did anyone notice it also increases sometimes?

the overall trend during my tracking was down,
but it sometimes moves up.
the way in which it changes resembles something else

It seems the payout is an estimated value scaled to the current value of STEEM
this is perfectly reasonable, but there are some problems with it!

problem #1: the potential to ruin hype.
(HEY EVERYONE MY FIRST POST MADE $10 ON STEEMIT!!! wait... nevermind...)

problem #2: the potential to create superstitions.
(every time I upvote some else's post the value of mine goes down! I'm never voting again!)

problem #3: the potential to create paranoia.
(someone's out to get me downvoting all my comments/posts! I got shadowbanned!)

The issue is lacking an explanation for why it happens.
I think the interface needs some adjustment to indicate what the payout is linked to,
here is my version of what that might look like:

the $ value would change over time from scaling value, but the 1st value would not.

thanks for reading
follow me, I post things sometimes

I think thats a great idea! Having the current steem price next to your potential reward will be very useful. However, it might make people panic and want to power down and sell their steem if the price drops too much.

I think the best strategy in trading is to panic when things go up ^_^

Haha thats definitely a method to approach the market!

I've wondered, thanks for the illustration. Great with visuals. I'm a very small minnow yet so just swimming until I set my fins on a good current..resteemed

thank you! ^_^

That's an excellent suggestion. At first I was puzzled by this until I visited my Poloniex account and saw Steem had dropped. Your image makes it much clearer.

thank you ^_^

For me steemit is a social network. It's not a HYPE. If the public begins to fill as a financial scheme, instead of a social network, the tool will have its days counted.

I had noticed this change in value. But I thought that change was due to Steem's price change.

I feel the same way, but I imagine some scenarios where people hype steemit to their friends/family/followers on basis of how much some post earned and leave a link, someone looks a week later and the number doesn't match what the person said so it gets a bad vibe from that. I think it's ok to have it scaling to steem's price, but if there were some visual indication of that, things could be smoother :)

The market is volatile. I am curious to see what happens after Tuesday when HF19 is implemented.

how can it be ? in same comment and voting

the scaling seems to be global across all pending payouts and accounts, but the good news is it can also increase over time ^_^

I have noticed that it decreases and increases in what seems to random. But it would make sense that it would increase and decrease with the value of Steem. I think your solution is a good idea!

Are rewards not linked to the price of steem so they fluctuate in line with market changes, much like your overall account value. X

I have also been confused over why this happens and did also wonder if my upvoting was having a negative effect on my monetary figures ?!

yea, I had thought of many reasons and did some testing with high activity and low activity, it seems the scaling value is independent of that, so don't worry too much!

Yes, realized that. Thank you for your analysis.
