Reality check: Steemit is NOT about the money?

in #steemit7 years ago

I came across quite a few posts of dear steemians writing about posting content on steemit should never be about potentially making money and thought I share my thoughts, my opinion, yes, only my opinion and everyone has and is entitled to their opinions. You don't have to agree with me and I can live with that :)

Firstly, do you still remember what was the main draw for you to be on steemit posting what you post, given the many social media platforms out there and so many that are currently more established than steemit? Facebook only recently boasted of its 2 billion accounts.

Let's be honest about it, shall we?

For me, it was the lure of potentially being rewarded financially for posting content or even just blogging. Granted that there were some extras that fancinated me, like everything being recorded on blockchain making it permanent, decentralised making it less prone to censorship, steem token, etc... BUT the main draw was being potentially rewarded financially no matter how little. Facebook paid me a whopping ZERO for the years I have been posting on it, sharing my thoughts, my views, my feelings, good and sometimes bad content... The fact is that I got nothing financially. Then came along steemit which is a game changer because one can actually get financially rewarded... It IS about the money.

Then again, it doesn't take long for a rookie to find out that nope, it's not going to be easy to make serious money here, even if you are writing good useful content because your reach is so limited especially when you are new that if your post doesn't catch the eye of a whale who decides to help you by giving you a pat on your shoulder, you are most likely to walk away with a cent or two of your own upvote. And I say it again, no matter whether your content is good or not, you have literally a couple of minutes before your post gets buried by other posts, never to see daylight again.

So after time, struggling persistent rookie steemians "trick" themselves that it was never about the money in the first place, it was about writing and sharing good content, blah blah blah when it IS literally what got them here in the first place.

Post after post, the "lie" somewhat becomes real for them, hahaha... at least for me... But there is still the hope that someday somehow, there will be a breakthrough when I discover the winning formula ;)

So for me, there is no shame to admit that yes, I would like to be rewarded for my efforts no matter how little, yes, I'm still persisting with the hope that I might one day be like the whales many hold in awe of, yes, I would like to have a post actually pay for a meal someday. Because if not, facebook, Instagram and many others allows me to do whatever I'm doing and I dare say on many grounds, in a better way

Money is not neccesarily evil, if it motivates you to do better then I think it's alright to embrace it.

Yes, I hope to be rewarded with my post with an upvote but I'm definitely not holding my breath waiting for it to happen and it's ok if you don't. But I am not going to say that it was never about the money ;)

Everyone is fighting their own battle and I understand and empathize :) Fight on!

I think people should be at least honest with themselves. If not for money, there are so many other established platforms for interaction.

It is easy to say that Steemit is not about making money when each of your posts gets $50+ or when you have hundreds of cryptocurrencies that you bought three years ago, or a well paid job, or wealthy parents....

I admit I came here mainly for the money, but as I wrote on my blog about making millions, money isn't everything.

I don't want to be here just for the money, I want to make friends, build a community and feel that my voice is heard. I have been posting for less than a week and already learned that posting ONLY for the money is painful and feels like shit. I also learned that spending an hour writing a blog post that gets $0.2 also feels like shit.

I am looking to find a balance between posting what I love and making enough money so I can dedicate myself to writing, because that is what I love to do.

Absolutely :) I try my best not to think about the rewards and concentrate on sharing my thoughts but it can still be painful at times to know that no one actually even read what I shared. Or should it even matter?

I think it is crazy to think it doesn't matter, we all need support. We all want to succeed, and success means something different to each one of us. But I doubt that anyone here think it is a success to spend an hour writing a post that no one sees, comments or votes on. If writing is the ONLY important thing, then why post it online. We need to be real

Hahaha... Telling it like it is... That's my man :)

Hey! If I am not going to make any more at least I am going to be honest! :)

Hahaha... I like you... I'm straight :)

Every time I find myself being dishonest or sneaky in anyways I hate myself, seriously, I hate it.

@alexthemagician It is about the money, but don't make it all about the money. Meaning, that with good content, as well as making good contacts, friends and/ or followers, the rewards will come. It will take interacting and commenting with others on Steemit before the true rewards are released. Stay strong, and most importantly stay consistent.

full steem ahead!

Yes, I agree that it's not only about the money and I learned early on that making connections and interacting here can be fun, enriching and may times enlightening :) Thank you for the encouragement :)

Spot on upvoted and resteemed... have you joined us on the8app yet? I have a feeling you will like that site

Yeah, it's about the money- but not just the money for YOU, but the fact that I'M GIVING IT TO YOU, (and other people are GIVING to me) even if it's only a penny or two, because I like something about the post or comment- or maybe it's just that particular person I want to boost in general. Don't discount the value of caring for others and altruistic (or at least cooperative) endeavor. The BIG difference here at Steemit is all our engagement is building EVERYBODY up, that IS unique so far.
If Steemit doesn't gobble up the internet in the next few years, it'll be because this business model has spawned an entire throng of communities, apps, services, and whatever that has, without any single winner- and that'd be a wonderful outcome, decentralized as all get-out and all.

Yes, I totally agree with you that love and care for others can go a long way :) It's the way everything can grow. Steemit is a great community and I would love to see it grow to something even bigger which I'm sure it will. Thank you once again, your attention and response is very much appreciated :)

I am just new here and I like how bluntly you expressed what most of us have been thinking about - the monetary part of this activity. It is good to be part of a wonderful community and also be rewarded for it. You are right. Facebook does not pay us anyway. :) I look forward to reading more of your thoughts, so I followed you :)

I am new here too (2 days), but I hope people here in steemit are doing a better job if they get paid ;) Too much "crap" and meaningless noise in for eksempel Facebook, I think.

Thank you, appreciate it :) I would have upvoted you but I am recovering from my crushed voting power.
