I've never met another Steemian...
...apart from the 2 I've introduced to Steemit myself.
In November though, this is about to change BIG TIME!
Having been a member for 13 months (out of a possible 18), you would assume I'd have plenty of Steem Power, and classify myself as a long-standing member of the community. The truth is though, I joined a year last August, wrote 1 or 2 blogs, moved to Valencia in Spain, met a girl (hi @osm0sis !), and real life things took over somewhat.
That was it until around March/April this year, when BTC started it's move from around $1200, that I found my Steemit passwords and logged in again. Things were a little different since I'd last had a look around. @aggroed had started the minnowsupportproject(MSP), @exyle had just began Vlogging, @kaylinart was firing out blogs like a good-un, and @surfermarly was sitting on her skateboard-chair, setting the world to rights and showing us how to mix Steemit with pleasure, and a Surfboard.
These members were the ones I looked up to when I 'rejoined', writing and talking about their lives, with or without a little Steemit.com mixed in. And so I thought then, I'll give it another go and see what happens. Soon I was interacting with many Steemians, new and old, writing blogs about Steemit, myself, cats, travel, Steemit, music, food, and err, Steemit. I wouldn't have said writing is one of my strong points, but I was actually starting to enjoy it. And even more so these days.
We had a good early Summer, Steem rocketed to $2.8 in what seemed like no time, and amazingly this number was being broadcast by my Steemit introducer @stephenkendal, for months prior - I'm still astounded on how accurate this call was Stephen!
Stephen calling $2.8 way in advance!
The Hard Fork numero 19 landed during this period as well, and the rewards pool and voting powers went well - mental to be honest. Some posts were hitting multiple thousands of dollars, and I'm sure you could have made a fair wage just commenting on blogs. Although, I didn't see 'Nice Post' hitting $50, like some of my (clearly well thought out!) comments did.
The user base (be it Bots or 2nd accounts) grew massively over the summer, which sparked chatter regarding 'communities' as a potential method to slice n' dice content. Curie was joined by other curation projects as 'we' all felt that some great content was being hidden under the raft of posts hitting the Steem Blockchain.
I also felt that while the influx of new users was happening, the more senior community members were stepping up their game to help support the new wave. I'll name @stellabelle, @surpassinggoogle, @aggroed (again) here, as well as @ned because of the delegation of Steem Power he shifted to the far east in August to help grow content writers in this part of the world.
August was also the month I finally managed to get my girlfriend to join our club. Desire to write blogs, or just a desire to not lose me to the Computer without much idea of what I was doing - I think it was the latter, at least to start with. @osm0sis is now however, posting a couple of nice blogs each week in the photography and travel tags, and this is a great way for her to share her photos with the world and create long-lasting e-albums. We are both currently sitting at the table, on Steemit - she has just posted in fact :)
So! Anyway, back to November and this meeting other Steemians. You may have heard about this event.. Steemfest 2? Well yeah, we are going! Add a British and French national to the list Steemfest, our tickets are booked. I've just finished ordering the event tickets via my Steemit wallet. Have you ever bought tickets to an event in 3 seconds? Nice!
I actually don't know what to expect, the vibe from last year's attendees is something like 'you need to go!', so that sounds pretty promising to me! There are a host of guest speakers, and not just Whales - some Dolphins, and Minnows to keep it real too. And, we get to drink some beer and play a bit of pool, and being British, those are two things I'm not too bad at ;)
Being serious for a minute though, we are going with a slight agenda. And that is to mention (to as many people as possible!) that we are heading to Nepal, the following Thursday, to dedicate our time, skills, and Steem, to people who need a boost. Hey, if i can 'tag a whale' here, i'll be super happy. The support of just a few dolphins - just as good. We shall see. Lisbon is a cool city, and I'm really looking forward to the event.
If you are going, we shall see you there! If not, I'm sure there will be plenty of blogs giving out all the info as it happens.
I hope you've enjoyed a brief history of 'my' Steemit. As always, i'm appreciative of any feedback, so comment below and I'll be sure to get back to you.
Did you see I resteemed 2 posts by a guy in Nepal? Jawdropping photos! Maybe you can meet up.
An amazing shot with the bus and waterfall!
Yes it is! This is one of the places in the world I would like to see. All the photos I saw on that feed are amazing. I have a similar Bhatan friend on fb, but I can't get her here.
She takes crazy photos from her village. I say "How the heck did you get to this spot?" and she says, "This is from my yard" lol.
@gentlebot found you :D
Lucky me! I need the boost for sure. I'm on a comment writing mission and will post my ideas soon. I make way more from commenting than from posts. And in fact, I need to vote right now!
Yes when I started out that was also true - and this evening I received a $9 comment vote so it could well still be the case!
You do put a lot of effort into your replies, which is always appreciated.
Check out the link I sent you (somewhere!) to curate like a boss - good reads!
P.s my VP needs another day of recovery - I vote too many comments!
lol - my voting power is my most valuable asset here so I try to protect it. I used to stay above 75% then 85% and now I try for 90%.
I did read and bookmark that post - very good ideas in it and thank you for sending. I'm planning to do an overview of helpful curation posts one day and it will definitely be there. I have probably 20 bookmarked. It's not like this info is hidden.
$9 on a comment! Now we're talking! I get 2 cents on the regular from big fish while I upvote comments myself for about 7-9 cents. This is why I appear to be important lol. I'm not sure why so many of them fail to understand their (possible/potential) power but they seem to have missed that lesson. But if 20 little fish do it right - boom! I have a lot of little people thanking me for my "how to make money when you are new" post and I hope some of them will grow and keep working the strategies.
Then I see people at 65+ rep posting post after post for $2 payouts and wonder how the heck that happened. This place is a puzzle for sure.
Nice post! I don't think I've been using Steem to its full potential either (posting here and there and not interacting with the community enough). Any advice on how to change that?
Thanks @bcox1 :)
(Good) Interaction is key, especially to start with for most of us (unless you are a ready made blogging star or super interesting!)
Well thought out comments, and the many discord chat servers and steemit.chat communities are good places to start. Find the competitions and get involved I think provokes 'natural' interaction so I'd suggest that too.
Cheers!
Asher
Same here, I've been doing more reading about steem and spending more time here on steemit, reading other peoples post and commenting and upvoting the ones I like.
I'm currently looking for communities to join.
Super nice post! I'm here only 8 months, but seen dramatic chances. You must have seen even much larger chances with your 13 months. Great you came back to Steemit and was able to convince your girlfriend to join. From meeting no Steemian, to one that is also your partner in life! NJOY Nepal and all the support you plan to give those in real need.
Hi thanks @edje! I'm glad you enjoyed reading 😁
I'm sure there are many angles to write about Steemits brief history, hopefully there will be more soon.
Cheers!
How i wish I could attend the steemfest2 mate, but it is so expensive for me here. Hope the next one is in a more near country , as i really want to be there at least once and meet all these amazing steemians in real life!
You can always keep on eye out for local meetups, or run one yourself. I'm pretty sure I've seen a few scheduled in Planet Earth.
Yes absolutely man! I am planning to do something in my country, well we are very few for the time being but it's a great opportunity to grow the community here!
Go for it dude!
It seems the meetup posts are popular, and good Steemit publicity 😁
Yeah it's an expensive 5 days for sure. If my reasons for attending were only personal then I think I would skip it, but I feel I have an extra reason to attend now, and so I hope it's worth it.
Thanks for the comments @progressivechef!
See you there!!!! Wooop Wooop! :-)
Incredible post!!! I am new-ish to Steemit, and still trying to figure it all out. Loved the insight your post gave and was glad to know that I wasn't alone! hahah
Wishing you a great week!!! :)
-Stephanie
Thank you Stephanie! Good luck with your travels :)
Man, you are so lucky to be going! I am sure you are going to have a good time.
Also lots of luck on your Nepal adventure, helping those in need...Keep steemin"
Thanks man! Yeah It's cost a lot to sort both trips out but hopefully be worth it all.
Thanks for your support for the past few months!
Steemed you into my most recent post. Any tips to share 'master curator'? 😁
Thanks I didn't realize I was doing that well with my curation strategy. I actually wrote a post about called voting strategy. I stopped upvoting the always trending authors and switched to the up-and-commers (like you). Authors who are not making hundreds of dollars a post yet but have the potential (based on the quality of their posts). Seems to be workin:)
Yes indeed! @osm0sis does the same so I think this is key.
Would you say you try to vote less but with a larger vote weight too?
I vote for comments too much which drags my power down which I think is lowering my %.
Thanks for sharing a bit of strategy 👍🏾😁
You're welcome :) I prefer the 100% upvotes also I never go below 30% when I use the slider.
Same with @osm0sis, except on comments (where curation is small/unlikely)
Nice job!
Best of luck.go ahead bro
I'm looking forward to hearing all about this Steemfest from the folks who are going.
The Wife and I are setting up some long term plans to go to the UK and travel around Europe about a year from now. We've met so many wonderful people from around the world on Steemit that I'm hoping we can incorporate meeting them in person to our trip.
Hi @winstonalden
Hopefully there will be plenty of news coming out of SF, i'll try to provide some of that!
Good luck with your travel plans, I have no idea where i'll be next year - hopefully not the UK though, took me long enough to leave and I'm not ready for rain just yet!
