Steemit Corner #4 : How are curation rewards calculated?steemCreated with Sketch.

Background :

The criteria that come into play when distributing rewards for an individual curator are the time of curation and the upvote's position relative to other upvotes, and most important is what precedes or follows whale upvotes, because if you have upvoted before a whale you can receive a considerable amount of the total rewards reserved for curation.

image.png

The reward percentage for an individual curator is calculated as follows:

   Curator percentage = (√r1-√r0)/rt

r0: Reward that accumulates before the curator upvotes
r1: Reward that accumulates after curator upvotes
rt: Total reward after 7 days

And since we all know that half of the payment that is given as curation reward to be distributed among the curators, the first curators can get a percentage that even exceeds the total curation reward for the publication, it seems strange, but it is It's really possible to earn more than 100% of the value of this bonus, and we'll tell you how.

The effectiveness of curation:

We will cite the different cases that allow you to improve curation efficiency, i.e. have more than 100% of the payout reserved for the curation reward:

To calculate the curator's reward, the following formula is used:

 Curator payout = (1/2)√PT(√P1-√P0)Δt

  with :

  Δt = t/5 if t<5min
  Δt = 1 if t>=5min

P0 = Payment before voting
P1= Payment after voting
PT = Payment after 7 days

Let's take the case that all curators have upvoted after 5 min of post publication, which gives Δt= 1.

Do not worry even if the formula seems complicated but we will interpret it by making things easier:

The rewards collected vary from one publication to another, but to simplify we will take the following reward ranges $1, $4, $16, $64, $256

Take the case that you upvoted a post the first time its payout is $0 with a value of $1, and after a week the post has collected $4 as its total payout value.

By applying the formula, we obtain P0= 0$ , P1= 1$ and PT= 4$

Curator Payout = (1/2) * (√4) * (√1-√0)= $1

You won $1 i.e 100% curation reward.

Let's take the case where PT = $16.

We get, Curator Payout= (1/2) * (√16) * (√1-√0)= $2

In other words, we can also say that for a $16 payout, the first $1 voter(s) earns 200% curation reward.

And so if for the cases PT=64$ we win 400% and PT=256$ we win 800%, if we apply the same principle

image.png

By following the same method, we obtain the rewards that are allocated to the other curators (we limit ourselves to 4 curators)

  • For the second curator:

With PT = $4 ($1 for first and $3 for second),
He receives 33.33% curation reward (100% for the first curator)

  • For the third curator:

With PT = $16 ($1 for first, $3 for second and $12 for third)

He receives 33.33% curation reward (66.66% for the second curator and 200%)

For the fourth curator:

With PT = $64 ($1 for first, $3 for second, $12 for third and $48 for fourth)

He receives 33.33% curation reward (133.33% for the second, 66.66% for the third curator and 400% for the first)

Case study:

You can access the Steemworld.org site to detect at random a publication upvoted by myself and check the effectiveness of the curation and also to check the voting position of the curator(s).

I picked this post of the user anasuleidy.

For this post, we find that kouba01 is the first curator with a positive vote value of $0.81, we also see that there are two other curators who voted, but their vote value is zero. for this he is considered as the first voter ($0-$1).

image.png

PT= $47.8 between (16$ and 64$)

In this case, kouba01 will don t lose a portion of the curation as he has voted at after 5 mins age of the post, for that he manage to earn significant curation reward as he is the first real voter in ($0-$1) band.

So for the first $1, he will earn more than 200% curation reward, he will earn exactly 227.48%. Then finally the total reward will be multiplied by Δt.

image.png

We have Δt= 1, so the Percentage of the curator will be multiplied by 1.

If we calculate the curation reward obtained by de kouba01.

Voting value of kouba01 = $0.81
Position of votes = 3rd
Voting time = approximately 15 minutes
Curation reward obtained = 7.284 SP (~7.284 * 0.25 = $1.84)

Which gives, kouba01 earns a curation reward of $1.84 against his upvote value of $0.81. This is (1.84 / 0.81 = 227.48%) of the upvote value as a curation reward.

I wish that this fourth post in this series helped many users to understand about curation calculating in steem blockchain in the hope that the series will continue in a future episodes.

Best Regards,
@kouba01
