But the Harvard robotics now become one of the insects with the Harvard Ambulatory Microbot (HAMR). The new generation HAMR can run on land, swim in the water, and walk underwater for as long as it takes.
What gives HAMR field flexibility is the multifunctional foot, made of electrowetting pad (EWP). The focus of electrowetting is to reduce the surface tension in liquid / solid interactions through electricity. That is, the electrical charge makes it easier for materials to break the surface of the water.
With electrowetting pads submerged and activated, HAMR can move across the water surface. With four pairs of asymmetrical flap and specially made swimming cap, HAMR rowing in a manner similar to a diving beetle.
