The LRU is made to explore unknown, impassable and hard to access terrain. With an approximate weight of 30 kg and a size of 114 cm x 74 cm x 94 cm, it is ready to execute planetary exploration missions and terrestrial disaster operations. The efficiency of the DLR Lightweight Rover unit was demonstrated in the ROBEX mission, independently deploying several seismometers in an unknown terrain on Mount Etna, Sicily.

It should be noted that the mechanical unit was tested in outer space for five years on the International Space Station in the ROKVISS experiment. This mechanical system consists of 12 degrees of freedom and has a nominal payload of 5kg.
Finally, two battery packs of 28.8V / 5Ah (with a lifetime of >60 min per battery pack), allow the LRU to acquire an average speed of 1.11 m/s or 4 km/h.
