STEEMIT (THE BASICS)
Steemit is social blogging platform powered by a decentralized blockchain called Steem, where it users get rewarded for creating and curating good content. Steemit rewards it users in digital tokens called Steem which is similar to Bitcoins. It consensus algorithm, Delegated Proof of Stake, or DPOS makes it different from Bitcoin which works on PoW. Unlike Bitcoin which have Miners, Steem has ‘witnesses’ who produce blocks. 10% of the block reward goes to the witnesses while 90% of the block rewards goes to content creators, curators.
WHO IS A WITNESS
Simply put, Witnesses are guardians of the blockchain! Being trusted members of the community, Witnesses are generally voted for. Regarded as qualified and experienced in administration of servers, cryptocurrency networks and software they are expected to keep a block-producing Steem node running 24/7.
As a reward to their numerous and positive services to ME and YOU, Witnesses are rewarded for running their node by getting powered up by 1 STEEM for each block they produce. With this they are further incentivized to be long-term contributors to Steemit curation. Witnesses also represent major investment in the steem economy, monetarily and in terms of manpower.
A more friendly description of Witnesses is seen in @puerpinay's post Here and it reads "Witnesses are our peers. They are other members of Steemit who; Using their own money, pay to rent or maintain their own Steemit servers which process all of our upvotes, blogs, comments, and transfers on this platform. Essentially, this helps secure the network, since every witness maintains a server with a constantly updating version of Steemit." I never knew much about these fellows until I took in those words. So their are people worked rooooooooound the clock just to make life easy for other!
VOTING
So some few hours ago, I decided to cast my vote for @steemgigs to simply be approved as a Witness! I'm cocksure a good number of us are well familiar with @surpassinggoogle simply because we must have in one way or the other benefited, be motivated, encouraged and assisted by him. Sincerely, until yesterday, I only see and hear the word "witness" on steemit but knew nothing about it until I read a post @purepinay shared, gratefully soliciting our support for @steemgigs as a witness and surfed the net to know more about witness.
After knowing who Witnesses are and what they do to the community, I felt compelled and at the same time thankful to @surpassinggoogle for all the countless benefits, in my brief sojourn, he's given me. I can recall in my introductory post Here when a friend told me "Guy, you're very lucky! he said." I asked him, "why?" and he replied, "Surpassinggoogle, has just upvoted you!" Then I was new and didn't know much about steemit until I started seeing and hearing much about this hearty fellow.
