The Igbo's are one of the major group located in the southern Nigeria with an estimated population of 5.5 million to 6 million occupying a total land area of about 15,800 square miles, 41,000 square kilometers, they are the second largest group living in Nigeria, some of the Igbo states in Nigeria include;

  • Enugu
  • Onitsha
  • Owerri
  • Asaba
  • Awka
  • Abakaliki
  • Orlu e.t.c.

They have different subgroup, and may be scattered in different villages but they all speak the same languages. Historically, the igbo's are from Nri kingdom which is one of the oldest kingdom in Nigeria. These group of people are very industrious, during the stone age, they make bronze ceremonial vessels which is part of their culture and heritage.

Their language belongs to the Niger-Congo family, a subfamily of the KWA. The Igbo people believe in God that he keeps watch over creatures, they don't make any sacrifice to Him directly but they believe He is the ultimate receiver of all sacrifices made to the smaller gods. They differentiate the most high God from smaller gods by calling him CHUKWU(THE GREAT OR THE HIGH GOD). Because God create everything they call him CHUKWU ABIAMA. I also know of CHINEKE

Their smaller gods include;

  • ALA - The earth goddess (They believe she is the goddess associated with fertility of human and their land.
  • IGWE- The Sky god (They believe he is the source of rain.)
  • ANYANWU - The Sun god(They believe he is the god which is responsible for the growth of crops and trees.

They also believe in spirits; this spirits are associated with different things and their believe is that forest and rivers of their land are occupied by these spirits; they include;

  • Mbataku & Agwo(They are the spirit of wealth)
  • Aha njoku(The spirit of Yam)
  • Ikoro(The drum spirit).

THEIR FOOD

The yam is the staple food of the Igbo. Traditionally, the yam was the food of choice for ceremonial occasions. Nowadays it has been replaced by rice. Other starchy foods include cassava, taro root, maize and plantains.
A typical meal includes a starch and a soup or stew, prepared with a vegetable to which pieces of fish, chicken, beef, or goat meat are added. Jollof rice of various types is popular throughout Nigeria. Among the Igbo who live near waterways it is often prepared with shrimp.

They are located in the Sahelian and Sudanian area of the Nothern Nigeria and Southeastern Niger. There are a significant number of the hausa people living in Sudan, Togo, Ghana, Chad etc. But the greatest population can be found in the Northern-western Nigeria popularly referred to as Hausaland.

Most town and cities in the northern Nigeria are predominantly occupied by the Hausa's from the olden days to this present age. Some of this cities are;

  • Abuja
  • Bauchi
  • Birnin Kebbi
  • Makurdi
  • Kano

Mostly the Hausas practice Islamic religion, which was brought to them from Guinea, Mali, North Africa by the traders. In the cause of trading with them, they introduced islamic religion to them and almost all of them embraced the religion,they are referred to as Moslem or Muslims .

Their practices is basically on the teaching of the Prophet Mohammed as written in their Holy book, which is known as QURAN. They perform their worship in the mosque and they pray Five times daily. Their Supreme God is called Allah.

The Hausa's that are not practicing the Islamic religion practice traditional religion known as MAGUZAWA.

THEIR FOOD

The hausa tribe is very interesting when it comes to ffood. Their most popular food is Tuwo(Millet, rice, sorghum or maize grounded into flour) eaten with some of their food known as Dagedage, Taushe, kaka etc. they also love ground beans cakes called Kosai eaten with sugar called Fankasau which can be used as breakfast.
