The making of the vessel

MEMORY VERSE
Jeremiah 18:6

Introduction

God has a peculiar purpose for any man that he chooses to come into existence Jer 1:5 and he also has an intent of bringing such purpose to fulfilment in the life of such a man Jer 29:11. God want every believers to get to the pinnacle of growth, which is to be conformed to the image of His only begotten son Jesu Rom 8:29,Eph4:29; as this is the only way by which we can only fulfill His purpose without struggle. This will only be possible through the moulding process design by Him and peculiar to each man.

This content aims to highlight among other things, what God’s moulding process entails viz a viz the analogy of the moulding process in the potter’s house, the purpose of God’s moulding process and how God in Hos infinite mercies mends marred or broke. Vessels.

OUTLINE

A. The moulding process

1. CHOOSING THE CLAY
We are dug out of the pit of sin by God’s gracious hand Ps 40:1-2, Col 1:13

2. PREPARING THE CLAY (Washing and treading)
God begins the work of sanctification in our lives. (Eph 5:26, John 17:17. The word of God is the water that washes to cleans us from the inside to the outside. God also tread upon us, to remove every external and foreign object that may be inimical to our making into the vessel he intended for us James 4:1-4

3. CENTRING THE CLAY (On the wheel)
God begins to create an inner capacity in us, but only if we become Christ centred and stops resisting the hands of God. After the potter places this lump, this glob of clay on the wheel and sets it to spin, he places his hands on the clay, not to shape the clay, but to cantered when it no longer resists.

4. SHAPING THE CLAY

  • its God’s design, not ours (Rom:9:21) Each one has a unique shape for God’s own choosing and specialized use.
  • God’s ‘5Fold’ Hand Mold us (Eph 4:11-15) This hands of the potter work on us to make us into a vessel fit for the master’s use. We need to realize that those who teach the word and minister to us are God’s moulding hand upon us.
  • Pressure (Phil 3:14, 2Cor 4:17) The potter applies pressure to the clay to mould it. The pressure can be an upward movement or an outward movement. It is never to punish or condemn us, but for our lifting.
  • The Heart (Ps 119:32, Proverb 4:23) The inside of the vessel is called, appropriately, The heart. If the potter doesn’t work on the heart, then the vessel cannot contain anything. The vessel will only look good on the outside, but will have no usefulness. Our hearts are a repository for everything that will come out of us , and thus must be changed, having the Law of God written on them.
  • The mouth (Luke 6:45) The mouth is vital, it’s the final part that anything inside the vessel touches when it’s poured out. Even what is coming out of the heart of the vessel is pure, if the mouth is broken or contaminated, it can change the nature and the way the pure substance is ultimately perceived or received.
  • Always in the hollow of his hands (Isa 49:16) A’s the potter works with the clay and the forming vessel, it never leaves the hand of the potter. At least, one hand is on it at all times, even when the other hand is tracing for some more water, or a forming tool. God keeps his hand on us, he will not let us spin out of control. He gently and patiently forms us. We are always in his hands. He will never leave us or forsake us. Even in times when we are being chastened by the Lord, He is putting His hand into our lives to form us increasingly into the image of Christ.
  • Water poured on the clay (Col 3:16) Water represents the word of God. We must have the word continually. We must apply it to our hearts.

5. FIRING THE CLAY
(1Peter 4:12-13) Shaped vessels must be hardened through fire or they will not stand up to normal usage. Fire makes the raw clay vessel stable. This fire represents Trials and sufferings. We become Gods intended product through this firing process. As God works to mould and fire us, our original raw nature is hardly recognizable anymore. We are transformed!

B. The purpose of the moulding process Matt 4:10

  • To mould us into vessels for service (Ministering unto Gods men)
  • To mould us into vessels for offering (Sacrifice unto God)
  • To mould us into the stature and fullness of Jesus Christ

C. Mending Broken or Marred Vessels

When the vessel was marred, the potter made it again Jer 18:4

It’s apparent that a vessel could be broken or marred in the hand of the potter during the moulding process. At this crucial point, it is imperative for us to know how a vessel could be marred or broken and how such a vessel could be mended.

1. How are we broken?

  • In use (Dropped, cracked, chipped)
  • In the fire (Could not or would not take the fire)
  • Fear

2. How can we be mended?

  • By submitting ourselves to the hand of the potter
  • By the blood of Jesus
  • By the Love of Jesus

CONCLUSION

It’s God’s desire to use us, while it’s every man’s joy and fulfillment to be used by God; but are we ready to surrender our lives in entirety to the moulding process of the father? He remains the potter and we remain the clay and He chooses to make out of lives whatever suits his purpose. You can choose to become a vessel unto honour or dishonour, but it all depends on your willingness to submit yourself to his moulding process!
