The Call To Holiness

In English literature we have many ways to emphasize something. For example, we may choose to underline a word or a sentence, use bold lettering, italicize, etc. This draws our attention to the point that is being highlighted. Jewish literature also utilized a simple technique to call attention to something of importance. They used verbal repetition. For example, when Jesus wanted to underscore a truth that He was declaring, He would say “truly, truly” or “verily, verily”.

In the scriptures, we are introduced to the attributes and characteristics of God. Of all of His myriad attributes, there is only one that is emphasized through verbal repetition, His Holiness. Noted Theologian and Biblical Scholar, R.C. Sproul, says that “the holiness of God is spoken of in the superlative as it is raised to the 3rd degree of repetition by the angels themselves” (Is. 6:2; Rev. 4:8). The Holiness of God is His chief attribute. Consider how the bible begins.

“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth”. Gen. 1:1

Notice that God is separate, transcendent, distinct and set apart from His creation. The word we are looking for is holy. The very first thing the bible reveals to us about God is that He is holy. This not by accident, but by design. Some look at this verse and see God being introduced to us as Creator. Yes, but He is being introduced as the Holy Creator.

Be Ye Holy For I Am Holy

When we think of “holy” we usually think of moral purity or righteous conduct. The word holy also means to be set apart. God calls us to be and to live holy before Him. This means that we are to live a life that is set apart for His service. Again, holiness is God’s chief attribute. From the standpoint of Holy meaning moral purity, righteousness and set apart for His service, it should be our chief attribute as well.

Here are some of the benefits of holiness in the life of the believer.

  1. Holiness provides greater intimacy with God. It will also build spiritual strength. One of the things that prevent us from living holy is un-confessed sin and habitual sin. If you are struggling in an area, the key is surrender to His Lordship. Recognize that you are accountable to Him for how you live. As we draw near to him, He will draw near to us. James 4:8 and Psalm 15:1

  2. Holiness makes us more useful and effective in our call and our service to the Lord. As we live our life “set apart” we become more focused on our walk.

  3. Holiness makes us a better witness for the Lord. As people observe how we live, it will provide opportunities for us to share the Gospel with them. 1 Peter 3:15

  4. Holiness causes us to please God and to be fruitful. Rom. 12:1-2; Gal 6:8
