It is Not What You Know, But Who You Know

The old adage says, “It’s not what you know, it’s who you know.” Being “connected” and having a wide network can be beneficial to developing a successful career. I remember the time a friend of mine’s father-in-law worked in the auto manufacturing industry. He had been employed at a plant for almost 20 years until it shut down. When a new auto factory opened up in the area, naturally he applied.

To his surprise the hiring manager had been a colleague of his at the previous factory. They talked about everything under the sun. They talked about everything except the job he was applying for. Finally the hiring manger said, “So, when do you want to start?” His relationship with the gatekeeper made all of the difference. The interview was just a formality. To be sure he was qualified for the position and could do the job, but he knew someone who could say yes.

It is important that we are good at what we do. It is also important to have the right relationships in life. Jeff Goins in his blog “Goins, Writer” says that In business and life, relationship is everything.

Paul the Apostle

Saul of Tarsus was first in his class and more educated than all of his peers. He studied at the University of Damascus. As a Greek learning center, Damascus surpassed both Athens and Alexandria. For his Jewish education he studied under the revered Rabbi, Gamaliel. Both his Greek and Jewish education served him well as he advanced in his legal career. By all accounts, he was a high achiever. But with all that he had achieved, he said none of it compared to knowing Jesus. (Phil. 3:8)

Get To Know Him

Ted Schroder, Pastor of Amelia Plantation Chapel says “We get into trouble when we think that knowing God is about what we know rather than who we know. Christianity is about personal knowledge, personal relationships.”

On the final day of judgement, we will not be playing Trivia Pursuit. In other words, the questions asked of us will not be to elicit how much we know. They will all be centered on our relationship with the Lord. Matt. 25:35, Matt. 7:21-23 John 17:3; John 10:14; 1 John 5:20

The true essence of Christianity is not what you know but who you know. Do you know Him?
