5 Downers, 10 Uppers: A Year Addicted to Steemit (Happy Birthday To Me!) + 10 STEEM BOUNTY!
Oh gosh, my Steembirthday was last week! A year addicted to Steem! It's kinda wierd to think of me a year ago, super nervous about my introduce yourself post, posted a couple of weeks after I signed up. AW, look how young-in-the-steemwheel I am! Making sure I'm backlit so no one really sees me. Well, a year on and I think most of you know me pretty well, and some of you even follow me and comment on my posts and stuff, so cheers for that! Turns out I shouldn't have been so nervous after all.
5 DOWNERS
- Sometimes I spend hours and hours on a post and no one would read it. And the shitpost above you in the feed got a $80 dollar payout because they are cooler than you. This used to bother me. A lot. Now I don't care. It's just writing. No one has to read it. And sometimes it's just dumb luck - you post at the right time of day, or a whale reads it, or someone cool resteems you.
- Some twat downvoted my post. Trolls exist even on Steemit. Rattled me - but I let it go. Doesn't mean a thing in the grander scheme of things, and their downvote is as pathetic as they are. Saying that, I've accidentally hit the downvote button twice and had to explain myself. Sorry @surfermarly. How embarrassing. Flagwars and downvotes are for assholes. Unless you are a racist homophobe, in which case you deserve it. I think.
- The Hardfork meant we couldn't post for a week, and created some intense FUD - what a crazy week that was. Could we trust that STINC was making decisions in our best interests? Would we recover from a week without steeming? Turns out we did, and we all had a nice time. The RC credit thing has been a bummer, but we all just stepped in to help out, delegating and supporting new comers. Oh, that's an upper, isn't it?
- The crypto market crashed big time and with that, many good Steemians left the platform, disillusioned and unwilling to post if they weren't going to earn what they were earning when they first started. Come back! Please come back! We miss you! On the flipside, the people who did stick around are doing okay for themselves and will be in a good place when the market goes up again and everyone comes back. Yay.
10 UPPERS
- People should make effort to tell people they care about what they do. It really can make the difference to someone's day. This is what @llfarms did when I was feeling a bit despondent - she made sure she took the time to respond to my C.O.D (my comments of despair) with enough love to make me cry. And then she randomly delegated me 1000SP for the month one day, totally out of the blue, in recognition of my efforts on Steemit. It was the first big delegation I'd ever recieved and ironically I had left all my despair behind at that point, but boy it was a nice gift to recieved, and I upvoted like a mad woman that month to spread that love around.
- I made a lot of friends. Who would have thought I'd have friends in Spain, Texas, the Ozarks, Colorado, and all sorts of far away places within a year? Honestly - you all rock. You know who you are! I love you! You're welcome round for a cuppa at mine anytime, and you know that. Thanks for putting up with my craziness, my ups and downs and highs and lows. You have made my year really, really cool.
- I spoke on voice for the first time in a Discord radio show. The one time that I accidentally left my mike on @mrprofessor said "I can 'ear you tyyyyyypppppppppinnnngggg' and scared me so much that I slammed my laptop shut in horror. A few weeks later I actually spoke in a radio chat with Natural Medicine crew and it was SO.MUCH.FUN. Thanks @metametheus and @thetreeoflife for making me feel so comfortable. We spoke for two hours and I buzzed all weekend off the loveliness of that chat. I'm still terrified of voice though - have a show coming up with @pennsif soon and trying to psyche myself into NOT tripping over my words.
- I won 20 Steem randomly just for being in a chatroom - I think that was @llfarms again. In fact, I've won a few things, which is a real buzz. Plus, I've run a lot of competition on Steemit too and it feels good to reward people for their efforts!
- I won a short story competition for a horror story I wrote called 'Horses' - it was such a buzz. I also got a huge whale upvote for that - around 70 dollars at payout. Ah, those were the days. It was really cool to win that contest and inspired me to go in more.
- I was accepted into Tribe Steem Up, whose ethos matches my own. This blew me away, as there were some talented people in there and I felt quite humbled they'd let me in. I met some really nice crew in there that I admire to this day. I also absolutely loved being involved with @ecotrain, @freedomtribe and @earthtribe, meeting some like minded folk whose friendships I really value.
- I started Natural Medicine. What a awesome few months that's been! @naturalmedicine promotes natural healing wisdoms from herbalism to yoga to mushrooms to - well, anything really! - on the Steem blockchain and I'm super proud for hanging in there during the slump. We've got an awesome core team who are dedicated and bloody lovely, and I've learnt a lot! Man, it's gonna be busy when the bulls start a-runnin'!
- Homesteaders CoOp started up, and I got involved, and I'm so glad I did. It feels great to help support an ethical marketplace run by steem! Such a beautiful vision, and so many great people offering products and services.
- I fine tuned my writing skills. I love writing. It's meditative and helps me work through shit. It's a creative outlet too. I think I've got a little better at it, and it's been nice to have an audience. Thanks for reading!!
- I have learnt ALOT! I've learnt so much from reading your posts, about all kinds of things from gardening to what it might be like to live in Belize, Costa Rica or Nicaragua. I've learnt more about America than I ever have before, and hey, turns out Americans are pretty cool people. My geography has improved - I now know the difference between the east and west coast of the States. I met a lot of people in India too. And if I don't know something, all I have to do is ask and a Steemian will answer. You guys beat Google, hands down.
You know, I could probably think of twenty uppers, but I think that's enough to say both to myself and to Steemians in general that this place is worth all our efforts. I'm lucky that I'm in a position to not desperately need steem to survive, so the upvotes aren't as important to me as the friendships and other benefits for being on this platform. Perhaps that's why it's been easier for me to stick around. I've also worked out a steem life balance - I don't post every day like I used to and I'm okay with that too. Steem free days also are good for me - it's nice to step away from the screen for a bit. I know it's not going anywhere, and it'll be here and smiling when I get back.
HI @riverflows
Congrats on your Steembirthday and well done for sticking it out this long especially with so many defecting due to the price it really shows we are building more than just a money making platform when I see people sticking around regardless and enjoying all the platform has to offer
I wish you all the best and I hope you continue to use steem and continue to grow. We're still very much at the starting point and who knows where this could go so lets all enjoy the ride together
Thanks so much! Appreciated!!
HAPPY BELATED BIRTHDAY @riverflows! That was quite a year you had and could only happen here on Steemit!
I'm so, so happy we have made this connection here on Steemit! You have been an inspiration to me so many times and through following your writing (you know I am a big fan of your writing) I have upped my writing game too!
How wonderful it was that you created #NaturalMedicine! It has made a big difference in many peoples lives to have a place for uncensored sharing of any and all of the different avenues natural medicine covers.
Such wonderful folks in the community and I love being part of the team to keep it running! Same with Homesteaders Coop!
I do so hope that one day we will be able to meet in person but it is pretty cool that we can now hear your voice on Live chat!
Thanks for the Bounty on this post!
My one downer -
The uncertainty of where this platform is going, I love it and the people on it but I know that there can be changes made so quickly and it all could be taken away. (but we still have Discord to connect - great Natural Medicine discord channel by the way!)
2 Uppers
Oh it's got to be the fabulous connections and friendships I've made here, people I never would have connected with else wise and folks from all over the world (reminds me of the days when I had pen-pals!)
Seeing what I had envisioned for ways to have a better future starting to manifest here on the blockchain and that I get to play a part in it coming about! So no matter what happens to Steemit that has been truly valuable to me and I'm sure with all the connections I've made it will continue to manifest and make for brighter futures! Definitely will make my future brighter!
♥♥♥ Meeting you on Steemit = BEST thing ever! ♥♥♥ You really have done and experienced a lot of new stuff in such a short time, I always thought you'd been on steemit a lot longer than that. I am a huge fan of your short stories/fiction and everything else you write too! I adore you xx
Aw.... I get hearts and all! Thanks so much!!! I adore you right back! Couldn't be here wihtout you!
Hi dear, CONGRATS what a ride it is here ! Its a great life gives us this extra ! The downers well he they Will always be There, and alot off the times feel unfair. I choose to close My mind to that. I Made alot of friends Thats what counts. And for a socialvirgin I now have friends in every timezone and No downer can beat that.
So Nice to See All you accomplishments and the network you build. I salute you on this birthday-on-Steem and wish you many more. NAMASTE
I agree - I have friends in so many timezones and that's super cool! Namaste to you, sister of the blockchain! xx
The best thing is there is always someone awake !
To begin with, congratulations on surpassing one year on Steem.
I believe it is a pretty rough journey at the start for everyone until we get to know people who share the same niche or passion as us.
In this light, I would describe my downer and uppers as requested.
Downer
Uppers
I won 25 Steem in a bounty in December last year and it was placed by the Co-founder of steem bounty @knircky himself. I cannot remember ever winning anything close to 15Steem (I remember winning 10SBI lol)
I was able to pick out two dApps on Steem that suit me (Partiko and dpoll) and give in my 100% in using and promoting the dApps. Today, I am a well known and respected user of these dApps. PS: You can see me at the leaderboard of these dApps.
Have a great weekend!

Wow thats a huge bounty to win!! Nice!
I never know if a dtube is going to reward me or not and I didn't realise they took a big cut!! Do you think writing a post takes less or more time than a video?
Thanks for your comment.

Writing a post takes less time than a video.
It is easy to record a video but the main task is to edit it. Video editing is complicated and It would take an hour or more to edit video such that it becomes presentable and Interesting depending on the length of the video.

Happy Steem b’day!!! 🎂🎉
Thanks for all that you bring to the wider community. I don’t think I’d be as active had it not been for your encouragement in becoming part of the NM community!!
One ‘up’ for me is the sense of community that is here despite the price drop and all the challenges the blockchain has gone through. That’s what I remain here for, that’s who I keep creating content for: the stayers!
Another ‘up’ for me is the way engagement is, for the most part, respectful and inviting even when there are differences. Of course things can get heated, and I have a couple of times seen engagement which was rude, discourteous, and downright mean.... but that was the vast minority of cases... and nothing like the level of trolling and vitriol found on certain other platforms.
A ‘down’ for me is how the prospect of financial reward can lead to inauthentic commenting and posting. I particularly noticed this when I set bounties on some of my posts. Some folks are commenting purely to get free $TEEM, and clearly haven’t read the post or care about what’s written beyond getting a share of the bounty. Engagement works when it’s genuine and authentic, and spam comments irritate me...
... so the real ‘downer’ is actually how I react negatively to those situations. I have expectations that other folks will express themselves authentically, and so the lesson for me is simply about kindness. Because I just don’t know whether someone is being genuine or not, and I’m just projecting that and being overly-judgemental.
So that ‘downer’ is also somewhat of an ‘upper’ if it’s helping me change my own attitudes and behaviours.
Let’s go celebrate this somewhere....

As I wrote my post I kept thinking how downers are actually uppers in suprise. Like the snoring man in savasana I am entering infinite space. It's not his fault I'm pulled back.. it's mine, for giving it my attention. How wise of us that we can see lessons in this instead of hook attention on negatives. Like the flagwars or whales upvoting each other, I choose to ignore it. Although I DID NOT like it when one kept arriving in my feed with the C word in it, which made me wonder about why I felt so strongly about that in particular...
So glad you are still here... great comment, and as I know you, absolutely authentic.
Do you wait til Day 7 to go upvote the comments when you set a bounty? Don't want to jump the gun.

Well I always vote as I read them, only because I may forget to do it before payout... and then the bounty bot just gives it to everyone equally.
And I think the % of the vote also influence how much of the share of the bounty everyone gets.

You @riverflows are one of the most generous, upbeat, kind, and down to earth persons I have met here on the blockchain... and I genuinely mean that from my heart!
The one downer I would have to say is the sense of anticipation one gets when they first start out on the blockchain, I am fairly new myself so I am going off my most recent experience. By this I mean, I didn't start out on the blockchain in anticipation of any type of monetary reward, for me it is all about the acceptance. So, when you first start out with high expectations that everyone is gonna love you and upvote you right out of the starting gate, it might be a bit of a let down... when you see your posts making pittance, it is a tough pill to swallow and I know that pretty much every newbie will encounter this.
My first upper feeds off the downer and is to say that "don't worry, it will happen with some effort". I am in no way suggesting your payouts will be huge if that is what you are here for, but I will say that if you put a little effort into finding your community, then your rewards will be huge! You will meet your family, your tribe, your place! It's all about the community, and once you start interacting on Discord you will meet the most wonderful people which will lead you down new adventurous paths, traveling the world (yes, you meet people from everywhere and learn about where they live and then you can dream and imagine), you will start digging deep within yourself from your communications with others.... you eventually become a better person, be it small or be it big!
My second upper is the capacity. Life is not about the destination, it is about the journey. In my opinion, nothing beats the journey of life-long learning! Whether it be from the many wonderful posts, the fantabulous people you meet, the communities you join, the challenges you take on to understand the blockchain and Discord and formatting and image fixing, or anything.... you are learning. You are feeding your mind and brain which in turn may help prevent alzheimer's and dementia. You are growing and changing and experiencing things you may never have thought possible. You are walking paths you may never have walked before and journeying in ways only previously possible by transportation, now you can reach it through access of the internet. The capacity of what the blockchain holds is not limited to your front porch, it is only limited by your imagination.
Thanks @riverflows for the opportunity to participate in another generous and selfless act from you! 🍬
@thistlerock, sometimes I'm suprised to remember you haven't been here that long - you came out with your intelligence, kindness and great comments and interactions from the get go, making you a perfect Steemian!! I love this comment - it's thoughtful and inspiring! And thanks so so much for your kind words about ME! I had to read them a few times just because they were so lovely!!! Thank YOU!
@riverflows I must confess that you are an amazing person with a uniquely awesome personality. Happy steem birthday to you. thank you for your consistency, you ever-increasing wisdom, and knowledge and your devotion towards the steemit community and most especially our NM community. You are An Inspiration to many and to me directly, thanks for being a friend and I hope to learn a lot more from you. happy birthday!!!!
Humbled, my friend! Thanks so much. I appreciate your kind words, and am loving your inspiring, kind words you write on your posts. The world needs more of you!
And you too. The world needs you! Xx 😁
You said twat. 😂 You are really the best, for sharing and expressing and just being you. Also, if I didn't know you were so mic shy I never would have guessed, you come across as confident and passionate about topics, and like you kind of enjoy it! I get that fear though, I have it too.
OK for my 1 sad and 2 glad!
1 glad... I started writing again!
2 glad... Being involved in some incredible online communities. I learn so much from everyone here. It's exciting to see conscious people coming together and sharing all kinds of knowledge.
1 sad... The only sad I have is that I'm rarely interacting on steemit anymore, and I miss the community. But I'll be back! 😊

We miss you too! You pop in with these comments and disappear again!! Xxxx

My downer is whale wars where nasty comments get dropped on to the posts of innocent people who do not even know what is going on. The spamming of the "c" word on curied posts was the worst, but all of it makes me sad. I know there are only few whales doing this, but it it so wide-reaching that it looks more prevalent than it is.
My best upper is being able to live off steem money and related since Dec 2017. I dropped so much of my other work, and it is a huge struggle, but somehow each month I still have a roof over my head. Living a very cheap life in Malaysia helps and I am not the only one able to do this trick, so I feel good about all the time I put here.
Meeting many steemers in person in various countries has been a wonderful treat. I have been pushing my natural weight loss message for 8 years now on social media. No where else has ever given me such wonderful connections and good friends.
Big congrats on all your achievements, @riverflows. You are working this place to the max and will only improve in the next year.
Great comment. Oh those nasty comments are horrible!!! What egos and lack of consideration for others.
That's amazing you have been able to live off steem for so long! Even in the downturn?
Posted using Partiko Android
Yes, since Dec 2017, but it is not always easy :)
