Did you know why '&' is called Ampersand?
& was part of the alphabet long long ago, which came after the alphabet 'Z'
BUT you weren't allowed to just sing the 'ABC' song ending in 'XYZ&'.
Kids in 19th centuries were taught to say 'and per se' before you finish the song with the '&', (and per se &).
Which eventually evolved into 'ampersand', as we know it today.
& the rest is history.
