Facebook exercises control on What You Can And Can't See. Can Steemit do the same?

in #steem7 years ago (edited)

One of Facebook’s overwhelmed content moderators – who reportedly sometimes have just 10 seconds to decide whether or not a piece of content is appropriate for the site's immense user base or not – appears to have leaked a slideshow outlining the company’s complex rules for governing what Facebook’s 2 billion users can and cannot see see to the Guardian.

The Guardian published the presentation in a series of slideshows divided into different topics: Sadism, violence, child abuse...

One of the slides outlining how the company handles depictions of graphic violence appeared with the following editor’s note:

Some use language we would not usually publish, but to understand Facebook’s content policies, we decided to include it. See for yourself how Facebook’s polices what users post.

It’s important to remember that Facebook’s moderators remove content “on report only,” meaning that millions of Facebook users could see a graphic image or video – such as a beheading – before it’s removed.

As one report notes, the guidelines “may also alarm free speech advocates concerned about Facebook’s de facto role as the world’s largest censor. Both sides are likely to demand greater transparency.”

Facebook employs about 4,500 “content moderators” but recently announced plans to hire another 3,000, the Guardian reported.

Here are some notable excerpts highlighted by the Guardian:

  • Remarks such as “Someone shoot Trump” should be deleted, because as a head of state he is in a protected category. But it can be permissible to say: “To snap a bitch’s neck, make sure to apply all your pressure to the middle of her throat”, or “fuck off and die” because they are not regarded as credible threats.
  • Videos of violent deaths, while marked as disturbing, do not always have to be deleted because they can help create awareness of issues such as mental illness.
  • Some photos of non-sexual physical abuse and bullying of children do not have to be deleted or “actioned” unless there is a sadistic or celebratory element.
  • Photos of animal abuse can be shared, with only extremely upsetting imagery to be marked as “disturbing”.
  • All “handmade” art showing nudity and sexual activity is allowed but digitally made art showing sexual activity is not.

Here's an example of the slides relating to guidelines surrounding depictions of graphic violence. It begins, predictably, with a trigger warning:

Here are a few slides that explain the site's policies for determining whether threatening language crosses over into being a credible threat.

Here's a slide that describe how the site handles threats made about public figures - which it determines as anyone who has over 100,000 followers on any social media website.

Steemit and Moderation

This form of moderation is not used on Steemit where the task of regulating the platform's content falls mostly on the shoulders of its users.

Hate speech or graphic violence would likely be flagged quite rapidly or just go unnoticed due to lack of upvotes. However, the flagged content would still remain stored on the blockchain.

Also, the fact that Steemit rewards its users for posting likeable content deters users from posting stuff that no sane person would appreciate.

For now, Steemit only has one content filter which is the NSFW (Not Safe for Work) filter. This tool allows Steemers to hide posts that were tagged as NSFW by content creators.

While these measures can't totally eradicate hate speech, it seems that freedom, respect and harmony are much more valued on a censorship free platform like Steemit than on Facebook.

It is my hope that steemit breaks the backs of facebook and any platform that censors freedom of speech.

steemit and steemians can be a FORCE for change all across Mother Earth.

Steemit can, as they operate the Steemit.com website - and they can control what gets displayed. What they can't do is censor what is stored in the blockchain itself. Anyone is able to create their own instance of a blockchain viewer, to present the data that is stored in the blockchain. (Even Steemit.com's code base "condenser" is open source, so it could be used to produce a site that didn't censor, solong as someone was willing to host it.)

I love the concept of putting the responsibility on the users. We are becoming so lazy that we want to rely on algorithms, programs, or others to keep us safe, rather than taking responsibility for our own actions and promoting the positive to drive out the negative.

anyone can buy steempower and thus influence on steemit.....noone can just buy influence over facebook, not even actual shareholders! They will always be disgusting control freaks! with facebook and reddit Its all controlled by a few at the top, really sucks and steemit is here to destroy them...free spech always wins

Will it be possible for a group of "attackers" to infiltrate STEEM to purposely use it as a platform of uncensored hate? If a sufficiently large enough group of bad actors unite and collaborate (perhaps out of band), won't they be able to operate at will on the platform?

Right now, the policing seems to work. But is there an Achilles heal?

I have found nothing that cannot be abused or missused.. So yup weak spot somewhere always is... Just wait for it lol😏

I'm for keeping all "speech" on these platforms. Hate speech today may be defined different than hate speech tomorrow. Who can know? What I do know is that our freedom of speech wasn't implemented to protect people saying "please" and "thank you" or other polite words/views. Offensive speech is subjective and is exactly what our freedom of speech was meant to protect. I don't endorse offensive speech, but I certainly support everyone's right to say it. With that said, no one should confuse "right" with license.

a very good report to some the truth will hurt
